I thought I read all the posts. Would be nice to narrow it down if it is related to half shafts.

All I know is I just pumped gas in my car.. And on the back drivers side window is a sticker that says 'world class vehicles'. ... With a thud that is. I've never had a car that had a thud like this.

To be honest I'm surprised more people haven't taken this to the next level .. And with so many people having it .. And many who I'm guessing just don't realize what we're talking about and think they don't.. That Ford has done anything about it. I'm sure they realize if it's trans or diff related it will = very expensive recall.
I am new to forum and only 3-4 months into the 2015 Mustang "thud".. Ford does not want yo address this because it will mean a recall so we all try to figure it out ouselves . I am trying to get them to take mine back due to the amount of play that they agree is in driveline, but can't locate ? The fun factor in this car is not suppose to be locating a fix to their problem for any of us. I want to do some mods to car , but not till I know I am going to keep Car or not.

This is my first manual car, and just picked it up last night. However, I noticed today I sometimes get the thud when shifting from 1-2 and sometimes 2-3... That being said, when I've had some really smooth shifts, the thud is non existent. I'll know more after about a solid week or so of driving it.

As I said all the way back between pages 10-20, I've had a Subaru that had the exact same thud, just as strong and it was a rock solid transmission, used it for almost 200k miles and never gave me any problems!

But if your thud is getting worse and showing up in gears when it wasn't there, there must be something wrong.

I've seen the MGW video where they show that the shifter linkage has a lot of joints to fit all of the models, maybe that's what's causing it?

Brand new 2016 Mustang GTPP...
I got the "Mustang Thud"...did a search and I found this thread. Exact same symptoms as everyone described. This forum has been very helpful. Seems like the Dealerships and Ford Corporate are not going to address the issue (no Engineering fix)? Any conclusions that the "THUD" doesn't cause any abnormal "wear and tear"? Slop in the drivetrain, two piece (vs a one piece driveshaft) seem like plausible causes. If there is no known fix, I guess it's a waste of time taking it back to the dealer. I can live with the "THUD" if it's "normal"...

Hi, I am new to the forum. Day 3 (300kms) with my 2016 Ecoboost Premium M/T and the 'thud' was one of the first thing I noticed when driving out of the dealership (unfortunately I test drove only automatics).
The thud usually happens when I take off on 1st gear from a complete stop or after backing up and can get annoyingly loud at times. I have driven many manual vehicles in the past and never had this issue unless that car was old and beat-up. I also experience a bit of shudder (vibration) when releasing the clutch on the first gear. If this is 'normal' in Mustangs, then I am not sure if I can get used to it. :(

I'm at 20k miles on my 2015 (I know i drive a lot..) and I get the "thud" when shifting into second when the transmission is cold mainly. It seems the slower I shift trying to baby the transmission shift, it will even make a "thundering" sound when engaging the synchro, it feels like I'm actually grinding a gear, but i know what a grinding gear sounds like, and this isn't that high pitch grind sound.

The warmer the transmission gets, the less of a "thud" i get when shifting into second. Also, even if its cold, if I shift faster into second with more authority in my arm it will not do the "thundering" sound.

Will changing my transmission oil fix this?

Changing oil will NOT fix the problem. It will help it very slightly.

I have the exact same problem as you, 2nd gear and everything.

So, is this just something we live with?
That's what I'm going to do, I forget who, but someone also pointed out in this thread if you keep the clutch in for a few seconds before hitting first it doesn't do it. Seems like something has changed internally in the MT82. As many have said, including myself this didn't happen on my 13. And as I pointed out before there is additional dampening on the drivetrain, with Ford adding a giubo (flex joint) to the driveshaft that was not utilized on my 13, or any s197 as I recall. So it would be hard to believe that Ford was not aware of this and or they didn't have the MT82 updated internally someway. Diesha with Ford customer service also made a couple comments, (don't remember if it was this thread or another) that the MT82 was updated internally for the s550 but she didn't leave details as to what.

The new reared could be part of the problem .. My car is going back, they can't figure out why it is so loose through out driveline, I am not settling because they can't figure it out,.. I test drove another Gt pp and it still made the thud noise but no where near the looseness.. New car next week..yes I am taking a hit, but would rather do that then live with this noise and more so the loose driveline
