It's called "Stick-slip". It's basically a jerking motion that happens at the interface between the driveshaft and the coupler that allows for in and out play on the transmission end. It all spawns from the friction surfaces at that intersection. I was actually talking about this with a coworker and her mentioned how he published an SAE paper on the study of stick-slip between plunging driveline (i.e. driveshaft in our Mustangs).

Another thing to note: most any RWD, torquey car or truck will have this phenomenon occur. Completely normal and very difficult to engineer a solution to.

I have it fairly badly in my '15 GT. I joined the boomba shifting bracket group buy and hopefully that'll reduce it by a fair amount. I almost bought a blowfish racing bracket but that'd be a bit too obvious should I need to take the car in for warranty work down the road.

Interesting. Thank you for the education. It must not be impossible to fix, I've driven two C7s that shift perfectly. Sure, more engineering dollars thrown at that platform.

Do any of the aftermarket shifters, brackets, or bushings, help fix the thud or the notchy feel? I don't need a race setup, but don't mind spending money to make a better driving experience.

And a rear mounted transmission probably doesn't hurt either.

We have, and dealers will deem the problem ''normal''.....like the oil consumption problem my 12 had. The ''thud'' doesn't really bother me, I'm just hoping the transmission lasts. And, something definitely changed with the 15s, because the 11-14s did not have this problem. I have driven quite a few and none did it including my own. I have driven 2 other 15 manuals, and they both ''thud''.

Could this somehow be related to the IRS? It sure seems to me like the sound comes from the rear end. And I've noticed occasionally I'll hit a bump just right and I hear what sounds EXACTLY like "the thud". Just wondering if the driveline movement caused by the MT-82 translates through the IRS as this notorious thud. Also interesting that PP owners seem to be reporting more "thudly" issues.

Ive driven 2 15s and neither made the noise.

I didn't notice it on the ones I test drove. After hearing it in mine I took another car out (non-PP) at the dealer and it was so faint I would not have noticed if I hadn't experienced it in my car and was listening carefully for it.

Which makes it all the more frustrating since Ford just says "it's normal".

I've learned to live with it, love the car, but can't deny I'd love for someone to come up with a solution.

That doesn't sound good. I wonder if a flat foot shifting device would relieve the stress of your power shifting.

It will do it even when not flat foot shifting, it's when I let out of the clutch and floor the gas again it thuds

I thought this thread was about a thud while you are moving the shift knob into gear. That doesn't sound like what you are talking about. I could be wrong either way doesn't sound good.
