Walt1120, I think you and I are doing some of the same things. Kind of feeling out the gearbox to see what works best.

The funny thing is, if I rev up to 3k+ going 1-2 it is much smoother than shifting at lower rpm. I did a spirited 0-80 a couple of nights ago and shifting was pretty nice, actually. Sometimes in town I just start out in 2nd, and especially if I am in traffic where I'm doing rolling stops and speeding up again.

Apparently this thud is a problem due to the two piece drive shaft! People who switched to one piece shafts report that the thud has gone. The risk with the one piece drive shaft is vibration on high speeds. Go figure!

I don't think I've seen any such posts here (not saying they don't exist). I have seen posts (in this very thread, I believe), however, where people who have switched to the one piece still have the thud.

I just put in DSS 800 half shafts. Clunks still there. No noticeable difference, except that it can handle my procharger better.

So, I noticed today (only 1,800 miles on the car) when I was going through a parking lot with speed bumps...I always push the clutch in and let off the gas going really slow over the speed bumps that there is a bunch of rattling sloppy slack sounding mess when taking load off of the drive train and or putting load back on. Is this part of the "seperation" that you guys are referring to? Everything just seems loose and sloppy underneath.
I wouldn't say I hear anything, but sometimes I do notice it feels (through the pedal, I guess) like something is still going on after depressing the pedal.
I definitely hear something going into a forward gear from a stop. I also feel like there's some noise or something almost "gritty" going from 2-3 sometimes -- I've been taking notice and paying very, very close attention to these posts and have trying to be very deliberate with my shifts. When I'm driving like a grandma, The shifts usually seem smoother. I really don't want to believe this is an issue -- I'm loving the car. I may try some BG Syncro Shift II.
Have you guys been able to address this with your Ford Dealers? If so, what have they said?

I have taken in a couple different Fords to a couple different dealers. Your without a ride for a few days, only to get the disposition of can not duplicate.

Your car basically sits on the lot until some random tech gets in the car and spends 10 minutes with it down the street.

I have not, I honestly figure that its all of the slop in the 2piece DS and the factory half shafts as well as the tranny/shifter linkage.

I plan on changing halfshafts, driveshaft and shifter with a possible bracket and see what that does for rigidity. Unless of course someone knows something that I don't.

I understand, Tele5.0. Let me know if you ever decide to bring it in.

I have not -- I'm kind of waiting to see how all this plays out, and see to a certain extent what the consensus is on all this. I've done a little "practice shifting" -- going back and forth between two gears and really focusing on making each shift smooth -- it seems like when things are warmed up, it's a little better, and I've also moved the seat up some as to really pin the clutch to the floor hard. There are no two adjacent pair of gears that ALWAYS feel funny... I've only owned manual equipped cars, and the car I leave at the Metro everyday has 156k miles on the original clutch, so I'm pretty certain it's nothing to do with my driving technique. Somewhere on here I'd read that the older MT82 in the outgoing car had a TSB about adding friction modifier -- but that the current spec doesn't explicitly mention it? I don't recall where I saw it on here exactly.

I haven't been alarmed enough by any sound to want to have it looked at by the dealer. I've heard some misc sounds but have chalked it up to getting used to a new car with new sounds. My main concern is making sure that I'm not going to trash the synchros.

No offense, but many of us have already done this only to be told it is normal, and all the cars on the lot do it. I already took mine in to be told the same. I think many here don't want to waste their time to be told there is nothing that can be done and that it is "Normal."

There has been all kinds of speculation on here as to the cause, but so far no one has been able to verify an aftermarket solution that can repeatedly solve the problem. I doubt Ford is going to go out of their way to fix something that isn't causing failures at this point. We are approaching a year since production started and it's still a mystery thud. Until there is a TSB the dealers aren't gonna do squat.

I agree, its too common of a problem. The engineers should try and come up with a solution and offer it to the consumers in a TSB. Know doubt they're aware of this obvious flaw. But there's no money in it for dealers to chase noises. They will keep your car for a day or two then go to lunch with it, and return it, noise included, or can't duplicate.
