Red vs. Black, can you share the pros and cons of each?

Red is a bit more compliant and best for street use. Black is less compliant (quite firm) and are best for drag racers. Actually, there is a third type made of solid aluminum for hard core racers. Any you choose, really secures the differential.

The kit I gave part number for comes with both a red and black kit so you have your choice. David Steeda recommended the red for my street use (the least NVH) and that is what I had installed. I hear no NVH at all and the thud boom noise is almost gone. The IRS subframe alignment slugs give the subframe positive contact with the main frame and ensure proper alignment. Ford only relies on a bolt to hold the subframe. What thud that does occasional occur is significantly reduced in intensity. This is a muscle car which is going to make some noise. I have the stock GT exhaust which as you probably know is way (too!) quiet.

Thanks Skytop, that is helpful. I ordered the kit with both and I am trying to decide which to install. I guess I will start with black and see if it is too noisy.

I have the tiny thud going into gear sometimes, but sometimes if I change from gear 1 to 2, or 2 to 3 in a spirited fashion there's a much louder THUD that almost feels like the car is being bumped from the rear. Anybody get that?
If I drive like a granny I just get the tiny thud. if I drive with a bit of speed to my shifts (not abusive) the transmission clunks hard going into gear and I feel a jolt from the rear.
Mine has a pretty loud thud under normal driving but when running it hard through the gears it sounds terrible. I took a buddy for a ride when the car was new and ran it up into 3rd gear and his response was, "wow, that hits hard".

Mine had a new engine installed at 745 miles b/c the dealer found metal in the oil and said the crankshaft thrust bearing was bad and causing the crank to move.

I only have 2,100 miles on the car and the thud noises have gotten worse and are now happening in almost every gear. Originally it just happened from N-1 and 2-3.

I have had a case open with Ford since the end of October 2015 and I'm not getting anywhere.....

I hope I have enough money for a RS after this eb explodes randomly. Probably will have to buy a 90 civic though.

The Ford Customer Service people are very courteous but unfortunately, Ford is dismissive of its customers and dismissing this very common, disturbing, irritating and unacceptable thud boom problem. I did not order any thud boom option for my $48,000 Mustang and I don't want any part of this non-normal condition.

This appearss as a breech of wording, intent and spirit of their warranty policy. Ford believes they escape responsibility by defining any problem as 'normal' operation of the vehicle.
This offense and bone headed policy is creating major ill will between car owners and Ford.

The thud noise problem is caused by a poor design of mounting the rear diff in the IRS subframe. Impulse s energy from the transmission to the rear diff to the IRS subfrane and then to the main frame is the cause of the problem. You hear it a very low frequency reverberation thud of the subframe adn mainframe throughout the car. It is a single low booming sound emanated from the rear of the car. You will hear one thud boom for every shift. You don't have to be moving either. Standing still, just put car into gear and you will hear it. It doesn't happen every time due to how your sub frame is aligned. The initial impulse is generated by the spinning transmission input shaft through drive shaft to the rear.
Ford acknowledged the problem but outright refused to repair it. I ultimately researched and found the fix and had the repair done. Finally, no thud boom at every shift.
Wow, what an interesting analysis. I thought swapping to an MGW shifter fixed it for me, maybe it was the Steeda IRS subframe brushings that did it. Either way, this (and a good majority of my wheel hop) is gone now!

Take it from someone who has been thru this already. Roll down window and turn up music, thud gone. I know it sounds kinda rude, but you will get no where and you miss enjoying the car.. You will not fix it.. We all have replaced everything to still have that thud.. I have not heard mine in 3 months and I am enjoying the shit out of car.

I hear ya and I'm glad you are enjoying your car, I absolutely hate mine. Not sure if it is because I'm way too picky or if my car just makes a louder thud than most.
I have driven 7 new Mustangs and 3 made no thud at all, 3 made a slight thud, and mine makes the loudest thud.

I used to go on drives on the weekend just to enjoy time in my car (previously an 09 Mustang) and I have yet to do that once in the 6-months I have owned this car. If I can't get it worked out with Ford, I will just trade it in and take the $x,xxx hit.

I have read every single post in this thread and I can appreciate everyone that says they just live with it. If I could then I definitely would, I guess it just bothers me more than most.
I just wish I had seen this thread before I bought the car b/c I'm certain I would have not purchased it.

The saddest thing is the person that buys a GT Mustang with a manual transmission and the PP is the 1% true car enthusiast out there. This is the 1% that Ford is crapping on the most.

Didn't several people say that the Steeda Differential Bushings actually greatly helped with the thud noise? It's not a very expensive fix, so if it's bothering you so much I would at least try those out and see if you see some improvement. Trying to deal with the dealership is probably just a waste of time

It's helped reduce/eliminate the thud for many customers.

Your post is just like mine was till I could not take it anymore.. Sell the car or keep doing what we all have done.. Mine is the loudest ..
Sorry, just no real fix in sight

I had the thud and no longer do. I won't be able to say specifically what got rid of it because I changed all listed below at the same time.

MGW shifter
Steeda transmission mount insert bushing
Steeda differential bushings (red)
Steeda ultralite springs
BMR lockout kit
BMR toe rods
BMR spherical vert links
BMR sway bar end links

In regards to the thud, I believe the first three things eliminated mine but it was there and noticeably there and no it's completely gone. All I here now sometimes is the slop in the driveline which will be changed out in another time. I have NO nvh from any of these mods other than a slight vibration from the stick shift and by no means is that bothersome. This is my experience.

I too have been getting the Thud so I stopped by my Ford service center here in Germany (US spec GT PPP) where the service manager (German) took me and the car for a drive and we did not hear a single Thud. He then explained to me that I have to change the way I drive a standard and went on to say the clutch setup on the 6G Mustang's were designed in Germany to perform like a European sports car. The release point is higher on the pedal then on American designed cars and releasing it slower will produce better results. He also shared stories with me about his struggles driving older Mustangs.

After talking to him, shifting has become a little smoother and I don't hear the Thud as often. I'll have to work on it some more.

Now, I'm not saying this is what's wrong with your cars but I do think it's something that shouldn't be overlooked...

This is a performance car, slow easy shifting ?
I bet it works, but we should not need to shift slow on a car with "launch" control.
