Checked my motor oil today (on a level surface, car sat and is still warm) what a disappointment its low.
Any ideas? Do new cars just burn or soak up oil or something? Is it mustangs specifially?

Been doing oil changes for the last 10 years and 10 quarts is hard to mess up ...so safe to say I poured 10. Last time was when I bought the car which was around 2k miles ago.

(BTW otherside of the dip stick 2nd pic is always covered in oil, the sides with the indiciators looks accurate IMO)

Hole to hole is 1 quart, so you burned about that much in 2000 miles. Not horrendous, especially if you drive spirited often. In the second picture it looks fine, although there's no film over the lower hole, so I dunno. I find with these cars it's better to check when they're stone cold. If you are under the lower hole, add a quart and monitor it.

Some of these cars do burn oil. Mine burned more when it was young, then as I got past 10K it slowed down considerably.

They burn oil until they break in
Ok I wasn't aware. Is there an explanation for it?
Since piston rings and cylinder walls aren't perfectly mated at build for any engine it takes a little bit for the rings to wear to the exact shape of the cylinder walls and there's no gap between them for oil and combustibles to escape.

I would figure it's been mostly broken in by 14K, though.

Same thing with my 2020. I noticed I was low on oil.

I think it would help with a oil catch can, it should take in the oil vapors especially durant Wide open throttle... You just have to dump the oil it back in once in a while.

Coming from nikisil cylinders in motorcycles the initial break in is real important. Need to run to redline and let coast to idle several times in the first hour of engine run time to get a great ring seal.

It's not what the owners manual says but when we started doing this to the "plasma" cylinders warranty replacement work went away.
