The power window on the passenger side makes a horrendously loud screeching/scraping noise when it goes up. It's quiet going down, and doesn't make the noise going up when it's raining and the window is lubricated with water. But when it's dry, the screeching noise it makes is loud enough to rattle your teeth. It sounds for all the world like a nail scraping on a chalkboard. It also leaves prominent (vertical) streaks in the middle of the window, a section about 8"-10" wide (where I assume it's scraping against something in the door). I know it probably won't break the window, but it's so loud and piercing that it sure sounds like it could.
I took it to the dealer today and they told me the window gasket is worn/dried out and needs to be replaced. They commented how the gasket gets dried out from the sun. Granted, my car is 4 years old, but it only has 6500 miles, and has always been garaged and under a car cover - and lived in Portland Oregon where there are about 3 sunny days per year.
Has anyone else experienced this? If you have, have you found any solutions (other than the $300-ish dollars it will cost to replace the gasket)? I don't want to just 'lubricate' it with WD-40 or any other 'lubricant', because it will then forever smear the window. I'm disappointed and annoyed that a window gasket would wear out that quickly. I've experienced this kind of thing on 30 year old cars, but not on a garage kept 4 year old car with 6500 miles.
Thank you!
