What is with all the black holes in the S550? Everything in the engine bay is slippery and seems tilted toward those black holes. I had a 10mm box-end get sucked past the event horizon last night.

How many of you have a tool or two that went away inside the infinite black bowels of your Mustang, never to be seen again?

Too many to count! Every car I have worked on I have lost at least 1 tool or fastener of some kind.

I'll compare current and as-delivered weight to make an estimate on how many.

I have a 2011 :(. I lost a 10mm socket one time. I looked everywhere, using an extension magnet. Couldn't find the socket. A year later I hit my driveway hump a little harder than normal. I opened up the trunk to unload what we have bought, 5 feet away from the rear of the Mustang was my 10mm socket laying on the concrete. 100% pure luck :)

Take it slow and easy. It wont keep it from happening but lowers the rate in witch it does, at least for me.

I lost a 10mm and 3" extension down into the fender. What a pain to get it out, had to go in from the door jamb and then getting that padding back was an even bigger pain. Lesson learned, all tools go onto the floor now.

While prepping the passenger side fender for a new '5.0' emblem, the new emblem fell (or was pushed) off the battery cover into the bottomless pit. This was after I had read about the issue on this forum, so I can only blame myself.

When I was getting my AGM battery installed I didn't think to warn the guy about it and he lost his 10mm socket.

Both items are still down there as far as I know.

I dropped a fastener into the engine compartment of my GT350 and it ended up somewhere on the belly pan. Couldn't find it, even after opening up the oil filter door and fishing around all the edges with a magnet. I decided not to pull the belly pan and just let it go.

Edit: I also sacrificed a socket to the GT350, but I did it deliberately. One of the exhaust nuts on the passenger side wasn't going to come out and I ended up welding a socket to the nut. Did the trick!

I did the same thing installing hood struts! Had to take out the foam thing and partly remove the fender liner to recover my tools....I don’t think the foam thing ever lined up correctly after that.......

I did the dual horn swap on my car two days ago.
I went to take the radiator cover plastic pins out, three fell into the engine.

I found one under the car. I said to myself... its plastic, I am ot worried if it hits something in the moving parts of the engine (more than a metal fastener/nut/tool/socket)...

I went to try to line up the dual horn bracket (from the top, and of course the metal clip with the thread fall off the frame... FML...

I decide to remove the driver's side fender liner (just front portion), peek in with flashlights, and see... my metal clip, another rad cover pin, and... enough gravel to plant a small bonsai tree.

I after installing the horn, I thought, why don't I take off the lower cover and vacuum out the gravel and also look for my last lost pin?

I take the lower cover off, and look. No sign of the third pin that fell in, but I see a DIFFERENT plastic retainer pin (the one for fender liner). I check ALL of the covers and all of the pins are accounted for. So I guess this must have been lost by the mechanic that previously worked on the car.

My 10mm combo wrench was recovered! I found iot poking out of the bottom of the fender well. I had tried to get it with a magnet on a stick, but to no avail. I think I must have pushed it down farther and it worked itself out.

USE A BIG ASS TOWEL OR BED SPREAD!!!

COVER THE ENTIRE ENGINE BAY EXCEPT THE AREA YOU'RE WORKING ON. AND PROTECT YOUR PAINT TOO!!!!!
