Hi guys

At a crossroads here.

Looking for feedback on a '17 vs. '18 for track duty events like Optima, etc..

I know most of the differences but would like to hear more from the more experienced members here.

The '18 has a much better engine with a higher redline and higher comp. It also has a better MT82 and PP1 comes with real nice brakes better radiator and better electronics/tuning for the ABS and stability control. I don't know if these are backwards compatable or not.
It is also about 7-8k higher.

I have a road race T56 Mag that I would be putting it in which ever car I get. The lower 11:1 SCR also lends itself to boosting better, although, as I mentioned in another thread, I would rather stay NA if at all possible, but would consider making my own kit basically.

Are there any other differences that I'm not aware of?

Any help would be much appreciated.

David

Hi David,

You can call Rodney at 1800 950 0774 - he is pretty well versed in the track events & can provide you with as much insight as you are looking for.

Not an issue if you want to put in a T56 Magnum, but the 18 MT82 is not better for the track. People are complaining hard about the gear spacing - so much so that some are actually swapping in a 15-17 MT82.

Haven't heard anything about the 18+ PP1 having better brakes, ABS, TC, or cooling than a 15-17 PP.

Agghhh...

Should have mentioned....the 17 that I'm about to pull the trigger on is a non PP car. So I will lose the better brakes, better radiator and I'm sure something else...which I don't know about yet.
About a 12K difference in price though...

With trans out of conversation, and 12k difference, it's a no brainier to get the 17.
With going into something like Optima a Base GT is probably a better platform to start with. About the only PP part that is worthwhile would be the bigger radiator. About everything else that is PP will likely get tossed for aftermarket anyway.

Good to know!

I was really worried about the lower redline and lower compression on the 17s but the 11:1 might actually be a little better for a boosted application.
The redline I'm not sure about but I suspect Ford was conservative at first and opened them up a little.

If you stay NA then one of the Ford Power Packs is a great way to go. PP1 & 2 raise rev limit to 7200 I believe and PP3 adds GT350 intake manifold and rev limit of 7500 plus, a whole lot of top end power. I have the PP3.

Depends on your budget. The PP brakes are quite good and would be very expensive to replace with something better from the aftermarket. Same for the diff. Plus the whole better calibration for ABS, TC, etc. that really has no aftermarket equivalent.

If you want to save money getting a '17, find a PP car if it will ever see a road course.

Thats very nformative.

I knew the 18 manifolds were much better.
I wonder what would happen if you put a blower on top of the pp3...?

Good point you bring up about the calibrations.
I was wondering that too..

Can the abs and tc settings be programmed onto a non pp car?

The car that I have the smoking deal on is a 17 base gt with a 6speed. I can get that for 20k

Not that I am aware of.

Add up the (additional) mods that you will need with a non PP. And don't forget the labor and warrenty issues.

Also don't forget the hidden stuff like stiffer bushings and chassis reinforcements.

Are you look to be competitive or win in Optima?
Of course I would like to win, but I don't know how crazy that series gets...
I've seen some real fast cars, but when I look at the times, a lot of times they don't seem that fast. So I don't know.

I would definitely like to place well at One Lap.
