First, frustrated because 4 ford dealers don't answer the phone. Left a couple of voice-mails and no return calls. Finally talked to 2 service departments. Both said the same thing. Bring it in, leave it, we'll put it in line for diagnostics and we'll call you. Both said 10 days plus. Is it the same everywhere?

Pretty much. The lack of parts, supplies, and techs has made most service departments even worse compared to pre-covid. Tons of vehicles just sitting around waiting for parts, and lots of techs have quit/retired. The backlog is nuts. I feel for anyone relying on one car to get around right now.

Mine is booked out about a week but they are not telling me to bring my car and leave it, they still let me come in same day and wait for it. But this is for minor work/service.

I was told by the dealer who sold it to me in Houston that I couldn't even leave it there. I'd have to book an appointment about a month down the road and then bring it back for diagnostics.

and lots of techs have quit/retired.
I don't get it, where is everyone going and what are they doing with their lives? I keep hearing this about every industry...oh, we don't have workers.

I get it if this was summer 2020, where noone was allowed to leave their house and everyone got $600 a week to sit on their ass. But the lockdowns and unemployment benefits are long gone, what are these people doing and how are they surviving? I get those that retired early, but surely there were techs that were under the age of 50 which are now supposedly not working as techs anymore.

Alot of it I think it's a bunch of crock to drum up prices.

No it's real, I work for a manufacturer. We make things and we cannot find people. I agree, I don't know how people shelter and eat if they are not working. Government hand-outs are over and voluntary unemployment is not covered. Also investments are down, so people who retired early with marginal savings should be coming back. It's a mystery to me too, workers can get top dollar right now and they don't want to work, or they just leave after a day or two.

Techs were already quitting pre covid, or at least moving on from dealerships due to poor working conditions and low book times for warranty jobs (which you do all the time). Now, with cars having to wait for parts and an even larger backlog, and places not increasing pay, it doesn't surprise me that people are moving to other maintenance fields at an even higher rate.

The biggest problem with dealers, is that the better you are, the shittier the work you get. The retard gets to do oil changes and brakes all day, making way more money than you, while you grind out the 5th cam phaser replacement of the day.

I have never had a problem booking a appointment these past few years. But I only use big dealerships.

I had a friend who lives in a small town told me he has had problem with booking.

Right, but it seems all fields are affected by low worker availability. If workers went from one low paying industry to a high paying one, then you would see some that are struggling with workers and others that are thriving. But all industries are being affected, even those that pay top dollar. I have contractor buddies that have open spots for 6 figure semi-basic laborer jobs and noone's even applying.
