heading to the strip this weekend for the first time.

Making about 400 lb/ft at the wheels at 4000rpm. Not sure on peak figure because the dyno broke during the pull and stopped recording in the middle and then cut out at 6500rpm. Mods in sig. mT82 d4 and 3.73 car.

what do you guys think I should set my launch control at for the strip? Lower than 4000rpm and it bogs on the street. I have it set at 4500rpm right now and it seems okay but feels like it wants more rpm. Seems much higher than others have it set. I do have good tires, 305 series PSS without about 2k miles on them.

never launched a manual car with this power on a prepped strip so just seeking some advice. Had a nice 302 carb build back in the day but it was backed by a C6 and a big stall converter. Just mash it and go!

I think you’re in the ballpark with 4500 rpm for a non drag style tire. If it spins, lower LC by 200 rpm and if it bogs, increase by that same amount. It’s gonna be trial and error. Please come back and tell us how you do.

Launch control is kinda a lie . As soon as you release the clutch , it's meaningless .
SO it's more of a clutch-in rev limiter until it starts moving . Anyways , I hold it at whatever RPM (I listen to the engine) then just ride the clutch out. That's how I get my best 60's .

Gotta find that sweet spot with it. The OP said he will do a writeup on his experience soon, so we’ll see if he had success at his track outing.

So here’s my quick write up because if I wait for time to do a full thread with pics it will never happen.

got rained out at the track (lapeer Dragway test and tune) so only got two passes. First pass was a clown show, had launch control set at 3000rpm by accident because I had disconnected the battery and it must have returned to stock. The car bogged like hell and ran a 12.60. Plus I had the car in normal dash mode so I ran into the limiter on the 1-2 because I couldn’t see redline. 🤦

second pass I said F it and upped it to 4600rpm. This put the actual launch rpm when the clutch grabbed at about 3700 which was pretty close to perfect. It did spin a little bit but I wouldn’t want to go any lower. Need a drag radial

Track was well prepped and about perfect air, 70* and low humidity. Car felt a little weird leaving the line, like it lost a couple horsepower ever tenth of a second or so for the first 100ft. not like wheel hop but like maybe traction control stepped in too much or the rims spun in the tires.

either way that was a decent pass, Cut a 11.93 at 117mph. That was on true E85 84-85% From the local speedway.

Bad news is I blew up the stock shifter no lift shifting it on the 1-2 during the second pass. It is loose as hell and bent. I’ll be putting my mgw back in. If anyone wants a FTB shifter bracket cheap it will be going up for sale. The bracket obviously works because it held the broken stock shifter together solidly enough that I could complete my pass without lockout.

Car has more in it, better wheel/tire so I can launch at 5000rpm and rear suspension work I have planned and it’s probably a couple tenths quicker. Next time I’ll forego launch control and see if that solves the weird power loss problem at launch.

Also, here’s a trick I haven’t seen anyone mention. On a factory no lift shift car, you do not Have to be at 100% throttle to no lift shift. You do have to be above 5000rpm and more than maybe 75% throttle and you cannot move your foot when the clutch is depressed. Like many folks I have a major issue getting the clutch to engage smoothly while accelerating aggressively but not flooring it. The car shifts like butter when you do this, like an automatic it’s so smooth and quick.

I found this out during my first pass when I had a mental error and came off the floor slightly just before trying to no-lift shift, which I thought would defeat the feature but it actually shifted perfectly. Since then I’ve been playing with it and verified it wasn’t just a glitch and it does work consistently.

Congrats on your 11.90 pass! That’s a solid feat, especially on street tires. I’m looking forward to hearing how it does on drag radials.

Heck, I still haven’t touched 11’s NA yet. If it’s not too much trouble, will you please post your timeslips?

How ? Even if you hit the squeeze in 2nd you should be flying to a high 10 pass.

👆🏻 this! Turn it off and learn how your car likes to launch. I tried the LC multiple times on the street and on the track and found it useless. My friend has a SS 1LE, the launch control on that works really well.

ill post the skip this weekend if I remember. Moving right now so it and the car are in the garage at the new place 40 minutes away.

NGOT8R do you have the FP 4.09s? Made a huge difference for me. Not sure if I posted about that on here or facebook but for $1200 or so it was worth the money

For anyone in MI north oakland gear put them in for me on short notice prior to track day

Also I’m pretty sure the power loss I felt is my clutch slipping. It was jerking the last time I drove the car on the street. Maybe got glazed with the 4600 launch rpm when the car hooked and it had to quickly drag the engine down to 3700 rpm.

Now that I think about it maybe the fact I hadn’t reprogrammed the ecu for the new gears yet caused the launch control to do this

Oh ok, I didn’t know you had a 4.09 gear. That’s what helped you get up out of the hole.

I’m still running the 3.73 gear.

I literally just got them put in. Had them for awhile on the shelf and got them installed on a split second decision the day before I went to the track. probably not a great idea to beat on them right out of the gate but we’ll see how they hold up. My factory 3.73s have whined anyways since the car had 6k miles on it.

From the rack to the track huh? They’re broken in for sure now, lol. I’ve been on the fence about gearing. If I do it, it’ll have to be a 4.56 gearset for me.
