Key Fob

I believe our car is like most new cars and nothing will drain the battery.. For example for a while my son would like to turn on the reading lights without me realizing it and the car would shut off the drain of the battery before the battery would drain. Thoughts? As far as theft. If the key is in the car in the garage or in my house.. Well if they are in the garage they can easily walk into my house and get the keys too. My other car is a normal key and I leave that key in the ignition every time.

How much trouble would your insurance company give you if you consistently leave your keys (fob) in your car and it is stolen? Worse if it is a teenager who wants a quick joy ride around the neighborhood and gets into an accident.

I just keep the key fob with my... keys. Inside.

i don't have any other keys. I have left the key fob in the last 3 vehicles. My parents were told not to when they bought a Mercedes because it would drain the battery in their key fob. Again if they get into the garage they can just as easily walk in and take the key fob off the kitchen counter. I was just curious. Apparently I am the only one to have done this.

A lot of other car owners suggest taking out the key fob when not driving the car. I was wondering what you guys suggest with the mustang? So far when I park it in the garage I have been leaving it in the car. Thank you!

why on earth would you keep the key in the car?
Everyone I know keeps their key away from the car

Comming from a service/ install enviroment, any time the cars are in the garage or service area the keys are in them. This allows them to be moved in a emergency. thus possibly saving them from damage.

My sisters boyfriend is an insurance adjuster. I asked him this very question after reading this thread, about liability. If the FOB for the car or the key is left in the ignition and the vehicle is stolen from your property, neither car or house insurance would cover it. as you did not not take adequate provisions to protect the vehicle.

Part two of this, and i am a little embarrassed to admit this, but when I was a teenager I would break into peoples garages to steal from their cars. I bet you 50% of the time the cars aren't locked. It was easy and out of view of prying eyes. Keep your keys in the house, for your own wallet. In the 90's car phones sold for quite a bit. Same with stereos.

I wouldn't leave the key fob (you know, the device used to start the car) in the car, but that's just me.

You might as well leave your house keys in the front door knob.

With the magic door handles, I never even take the keys out of my pocket to begin with, so when I get out of the car, the fob comes with me.

Now if only I had a house key with the same functionality so I don't have to fumble the groceries to open my house.

With the remote start, the fob doesn't get close to the car. In the remote start sequence, the first step is to hit the door lock button.

Has anyone taken the key apart and isolated the minimum parts necessary to trigger the proximity sensor and push start? I'd love to isolate those and put them in a slim case to carry in my wallet or even somehow attach to a cell phone case. You don't need the buttons and it would eliminate the need to carry a key.

Has anyone done this yet?

I was more interested in just the general question pertaining to my other car with a traditional key. No biggie really just curious what his opinion was on it.
