EDITED WITH A BETTER PICTURE:

I was swapping out tires for a different size today, and noticed this when they took off the passenger rear. I had no idea it was there or for how long. It was obviously holding air, but the slice looks to be down to the thread ply. Only 3k on the tire. Is it toast? What would have caused that?

If it's holding air i'd run it but keep an eye on it.. but your alignment is messed up

I mean i've had that on PS4S tires, but after about 20k, not 3k.

Tires look otherwise great. Both have 9/32s of tread with even wear.

I just want to know if that one is safe to track with the slice in it.

I personally wouldn’t run that tire on track. That’s a pretty good slice and if it’s as deep as you think it might be, it wouldn’t take much for that tire to let go. Would not end well for you and the car if that tire goes at high speed. If you have tire certs from Discount Tire/Tire Rack, that tire will be covered.

I am guessing you could have it dismounted by a tire shop and have them take a look from the inside. Cheap insurance, since you do plan to track it.

They are dismounted. The inside looks fine. I was driving on it like that and had no idea.

Anything could have caused it but it looks like a knife polk..
yeah, but in the middle of the rear tire? you'd have to get down on the ground or be under the car...so weird.

Oops...sorry about that. If it doesn't penetrate to the inside, I would run it.
