It seems to be a slightly common occurrence, since I've heard of it before myself and I own a 17 automatic lol

Real drivers don't need counter weights. Just sayin.

Ha, I steered away from the A10 because it's a new transmission and I didn't want to have any issues, joke's on me though.

That is exactly what it was, not sure how essential it is since it shifted fine for the week I didn't have it on. The dealership ordered a new one and put it on. Here's the part diagram/number from parts.ford.com in case it falls off anyone else's car:

Well it ended up being a part from the car, see above.

So I was doing a transmission oil change today and I saw the same part on my 18. I never had this on my 16. It’s not connected to the shifter and I wonder what it’s supposed to do.

Some kind of Klingon designed anti-vibration/damping device.

On the mazdaspeed3, the shifter weight was supposed to help "complete" the shift. With it there, there's more momentum behind the shifts. I removed it on my car to make the shifts feel more direct. With it installed, it felt like the shifter wanted to move by itself.
Some people even reported that under very heavy braking, the car would pop out of gear when the weight was installed due to how heavy the stock one is, so there's aftermarket lighter weights.

if you look at the 17:46 mark in this video you can see the part and where it resides on the car

Cool. The dealer said they had to drop the whole transmission and exhaust to put it back on.
