Although the stock cat-back exhaust on the GT is 2.5", the mid-pipes between the cats and the cat-back connection is only 2.25'. There's also some pinch welds along those pipes that make me suspect the inner diameter at some spots may be closer to that of a 2" pipe.

I already have a 3" cat-back exhaust on my car, so I'm looking at whatever improvements can be made ahead of that without actually removing the cats. I happen to have a set of off road 2.5" mandrel bent pipes left over from my V6. I know they don't fit up to the GT exhaust manifolds, but I was surprised to see when comparing them that they line up perfectly with the after cat mid-pipes all the way to the cat-back connection. So, I started thinking about cutting the off road pipes just above the upward bend with a slight angle to mate up with the bottom of the stock cats. The angled cut on the 2.5" pipes would make a roughly 2.5"x2.75" opening that I could cut a matching sized opening in the bottom of the cats that would then be welded together to make for a smooth 2.5" mandrel bent pipe all the way from the cats to my cat-back.

My question at this point is would it make any difference? I don't track my car, it is strictly street driven, and I'm not expecting any real noticeable change in the butt-dyno, but I like the idea of correcting factory short-comings and improving efficiency where I can as long as it's cost effective.

Would it make any change in the exhaust sound or volume?

Really nothing would change. The only thing worthwhile in this case would be a full offroad setup with factory exhaust manifolds. I've run my 3" catback with stock headers on track and didn't notice anything off. Now I have LTH and that made a great difference, even with a 2.5" bottleneck leading to the exhaust.
