Is it just me?

So my mom,dad,sister all drives Mercedes. And im the only one driving an American, other than my dad's 68 Camaro. But when I drive other cars, it feels like they're moving so much faster than the mustang. My sister recently had a 328i BMW factory TwinTurbo, and it seemed to pick up faster in the higher gears, although it has less power and torque being put down. Haven't raced any of them, so I'm not sure which is actually faster. Or if im just overthinking it

pretty safe to say your ebm is faster, but the germans definitely gear their cars to take advantage of the powerband as much as possible which is why those cars feel faster than they are especially when at highway speeds.

Yeah that's what I meant. I'll be going 80 in my mustang and it feels like 60. But in the other cars I've driven 80 feels like 80. But as for that 328i it went from 60-100 pretty fast. Maybe it was just how hard I was on the throttle. Not sure. Perhaps the mustang being big and heavy. It doesn't "feel fast". Thanks for all the responses

Well you probbaly want to kick down a gear or two when going from 60-100.
I assume the BMW is automatic?

I find myself speeding all the time without meaning to, this thing is so refined that you don't really notice how fast you're going until you look in the rear view mirror and see everyone else half a mile behind you after accelerating from a red light.

European cars are superior to American cars in almost every way. That may have something to do with it.

I wouldn't say superior but more refined yes. They know how to match a transmission and final drive to an engine so even smaller less powerful engine feels faster.
I had an E46 330xi and it goes through 2 gears before hitting 60. With only 200hp when new it did 0-60 under 7 seconds.
Their transmission logic is always better and more intuitive so the car feels effortless when driving and accelerating also smoother.
My GT auto just likes to stay in 6th gear all the time driving between 35-45 trying to save gas. The engine feels like being lugged all the time so I just manually kick down a gear using the pedals.

Be cool to have a GPS app that could measure the times at the various 10 mile increments, 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, etc. It may already exist. Or if it doesn't exist, someone here should make one.

Car and driver publishes this sort of data. This set is for the GT. Whether its available for Benz and specific models of BMW, I don't know.

I read that review, and the reviews from many others, and this is the slowest I've seen... the range is anywhere from 4.3 to 4.7 on the 0 to 60 times. So I guess it depends on the driver, and in this case (I think this was the SS vs the GTPP) who may be paying for the win.... just speculation.

+1. You'll actually find that the more modern the car, the less "fast" it feels. One would think it would be a "linear" experience so to speak, but not really. Next time you are at WOT and don't feel like you are moving fast, look down at the speedometer and it will confirm it!

Yep... On ramp speeds creep up fast. Does not feel all that fast and ya look at the speedo and see 110 at the end of the ramp..oops

in fact, every new model 3 series is turbo, the 320, 328i, 328d, 340, and M3 are all turbocharged.

I think another reason you feel this is because BMW's seem to really "under rate" their HP numbers. I had a '97 BMW M-3 rated at 240 HP, and a '98 SVT Cobra rated at 305 HP. The two cars were within .01 seconds of each other in 0-60 and quarter mile times were nearly identical as well.
Wife drove the BMW and the Cobra always won the heads up races due to the driver mod in the Cobra. With both cars being manual trans, she couldn't keep up.

I think its the long hood and the wide stance. Guy in the thread listed below made a posting of doing 167 mph in an EB (assuming PP). In Germany. No speed limits? I haven't had my car anywhere near that fast (nor do I recommend it) but I am guessing his car didn't "feel" that fast. Now 167 in a VW GTI, I bet that feels fast.


The V6/Ecoboost limiter issue. Once again.

I have a GT so maybe this isnt what you are experiencing, but for me the GT doesn't feel as fast as it is (in normal driving) because it handles speed so well. So 100mph doesn't feel that fast in my car. In my volvo it felt like I was flying.

The aerodynamics in this car are amazing. It only weighs a few hundred LBs more than my old car but it doesn't budge at all in strong crosswinds where my old car would be all over the road. I love it.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isnt the turbo in the ecoboost a twin scroll, which essentially acts similar to a twin turbo?
