Sorry if this is a repeated post.

Wanting to install a dash cam through the cigarette lighter plug like I've done in other vehicles but noticed that in my Mustang the dash cam stays on after turning the car off. In my other car, the same cam would turn off when I turned the car off. I was wanting to know if anyone uses the cigarette lighter plug for their dash cam and if it drained the battery of your Mustang when it stays on after the vehicle is turned off. On some vehicles I've seen, they don't drain the battery at all and some do.

I believe It stays on for an hour but over time I do think my dash cam killed my battery. Now I just unplug it from the cig lighter when I turn the car off.

My dashcam monitors voltage and turns off when it drops to a value I set. I'm sure others do as well; check to see if yours can do that.

As said it'll stay on for a certain amount of time. I believe it varies by battery drain, usually less than an hour though. It can be somewhat adjusted in Forscan.

I wouldn't worry about it as the car is going to turn off the accessory power before it drains the battery, and then you have extra protection through your dashcam software as well.

Alternatively you could hardwire it to the fuse box power window fuse which will cut power immediately after a door is opened.

There’s a brown wire with yellow stripe that acts as a true “accessory” wire that turns on and off with the ignition with no delay in either kick panel. Near the fuse box on the passenger side, and from the wire loom entering the driver door grommet.

Same circuit is available at the harness going into the rear view mirror (same color wire) and is available at the amplifier on premium and shaker sound systems.
