I am having the worst of luck trying to actually buy a new Mustang.

The first two dealers I called (the two nearest to me) refused to return my calls, and then took forever to check if they could get Mustangs as a dealer trade, and all 4 of the vehicles I was interested in got sold while they fumbled around. I did directly call one dealer that had one of the cars after getting tired of my dealer near me failing to tell me what was going on, and it turned out they had not received any calls at all from my dealer!

Then I found someone that would actually talk to me, and I recently posted a thread quite happily saying that I had signed a purchase order, which is mostly true in the effect that I've put down a deposit on a car that is currently in transit. However, for 3 days now I have asked this dealer for a purchase order on the car so I can close on my external financing (loan) and they simply cant give me what I need. One of the finance guys called me today and was like "hey no need to do that we can get you financing when you're here" and I told him I am using my own bank and don't want you to run my credit. He got extremely rude with me telling me they have "many relationships" with credit unions and can get my APR down to 1.99% but if I don't want that then fine I can pay more. I told him my APR was 1.49% so I have good reason for not wanting that and we abruptly hung up the phone.

Still no purchase order scanned to me, still cannot close on my loan.

I put $500 down on a credit card as a deposit on a vehicle that hasn't even been delivered to their lot. I literally have bought a vehicle before they've even gotten it and had to spend money prepping it for sale, photos, etc, and I'm being treated like this. I'm not sure what to do, if I can get my $500 back or not if I want to back out.

If you found a good deal just suck it up and buy it. I hate dealing with these guys too, but I know how to deal and as long as I get the right price I will go with it.

If for some reason the dealer doesn't work with you to your satisfaction, as long as you're not being unreasonable, then I would say walk away. And if they refuse to return your deposit, then I would contact your credit card company and file a dispute against the charge.

Tell the dealership that they either refund you are you are disputing the charge. Disputes cost them additional fees on top of the money refunded. I guarantee they will promptly refund you.

I am on my third dealer now as well. I had to buy it from the mainland and have it shipped over here. Dealerships overall have gotten really bad about customer service.

I spoke to a manager this morning and outlined my experience in full. He apologized and asked if there was anything he could do. After double checking the value of my trade in we decided to part ways and my deposit should be returned in full.

Might hop off the Mustang buying train for a while now because clearly giving my money to someone is so hard.

I had one general manager call me and apologize but it was to far gone.

In both of my experiences it was always the sales manager that did stupid stuff. Neither case was about money either. Just dumb. I wonder if Ford would like to know about this kind of stuff? It impacts the brand.

Typical of Hawaii though. They know they have the market so they don't give a shit. As an employee of a Ford dealer there I tried to buy an 05 gto from our gm store when they arrived and they wouldn't budge from 6k above msrp even though they were going for under invoice on the mainland

Just curious, have you actually visited any of the dealers you've called? If not, they probably are not taking you seriously. Why should they go to the trouble of shipping/fetching a car in for you just based on a phone call? A personal visit goes a long way toward getting taken seriously.

Most dealers make so little on the actual sale of the car itself, that they rely on doing the financing to make up some money (plus selling extended warranties, accessories, etc). That's why car dealers want nothing to do with cash deals or customer-arranged financing. Why not let the dealership do your financing, assuming they can match the rate you found for yourself? That would be throwing them a bone and would get them a lot more interested in helping you.

There are two parties to a car sale, and both parties need to feel like they're getting something out of the deal.

I understand dealers wanting to make money on the financing but in my case I was pre-approved with the bank I normally deal with. I am comfortable with them. I would think this would make the deal easy and quick so the dealership can move onto the next sale.

Yes. One dealer I bought a car from before and we were communicating only via phone for that deal and for this one. The communication broke down almost immediately with this dealer. The second dealer I went in person to after getting fed up with the first dealer, and the communication just wasn't there post my in person visit.

Why not let the dealership do my financing? I can name like a million reasons but heres a few:

1. I want to use my own bank/credit union, one I've done business with for years and have experience with them.
2. I want to have 1 hard pull on my credit, not 16. I don't care if FICO scoring looks at is as one pull, when a mortgage underwriter actually physically looks at your credit report, 16 vs 1 pulls is definitely a factor.
3. If I, the consumer/buyer want to do things a certain way it is an expectation that they are done my way and no other way. If I want to walk in paying cash, theres no reason they should try and earn my financing/loan. I want to pay cash, end of story, thats how it should work.
4. Dealers play the money game all day, they make plenty of money on cars, warranties, service, etc, else they wouldn't have fancy show rooms and tons of people sitting around. Have you actually ever looked at the financials of end of year books of a dealer? Trust me, they aren't hurting.
5. They couldn't match my rate! The guy on the phone said they could get rates as low as 1.99%, well my rate is lower than that so WHY would I choose a worse rate and pay more money??

If I can make one 30 minute phone phone call, a few follow up texts and get everything I want to do in order and then come in to a dealer, sign some paperwork, and walk out an hour later, that is an incredibly more efficient process. If I can buy a car in 2-3 hours of labor for 1-2 people versus a whole days worth of labor of 2+ people, why shouldn't I be able to do that.
