I would take 9 on a trade. KBB says 9,600 average on trade-in but a range of 8800-9700 too, assuming very good condition.

In reality the dealership is going to offer you 8000-8500 first offer and point out every defect in the paint, interior, etc. The usual dog and pony show. Of course KBB doesnt factor a lot of things like does it need brakes, tires, etc. KBB is way too rough an estimate. I would take it to Carmax and get a free appraisal, they say it takes 30 min.

They will leave about $500 negotiating room, and likely wont go more than that. so if they say $8500 counter at 9500 and reach 9,000. They likely own't stretch more than $500; they know what it's worth right away- its not a Toyota or some other manufacturer trade-in but a Mustang the guy has appraised 500 times.

They figure in the tax difference benefit you are getting on the new car too (prob $400-450) that's why they seem to go bout $1,000 under what they think it's really worth on roughly a $10k car. The tax benefit to you, and then $500 negotiating room usually.

They went $1500 under KBB on mine and we settled at around $750 under KBB; but my tax break was much higher on the new car (higher value trade-in) so I just about broke even really at the end of the day where I wanted to be.

But honestly take the $10k plus tax difference all day if it's an easy cash sale. You'll never see that from the dealership for a 2006 v6.

That's exactly the ballpark I thought I would get for a trade, realistically. If my friend seriously decides to buy it, $10,600 sounds good to me. I agree that I would never get 10k from a dealer, I would be happy with 8.5k for trade. Sawgrass just really pissed me off, 4-5k was an insult and they have shitty attitudes. I was never going to buy from them anyway, after seeing what they did to that Shelby on the guy's dash cam. I can only imagine what they do with new inventory.

4-5k is an insult even if it is a 2006. Its very low mileage for 8 years old and has leather and the pony package.

Take it to Carmax and get a real free appraisal and you'll have a better ballpark

Carmax hasn't been good to me in previous attempts. Negotiating with the dealer has been a better option or selling local. Last time with them was with a civic 2004, they were giving me 5500 for it, toyota gave me 8300 and I bought a new camry for 750 over invoice.

It really comes down to your trade, a kia is not something they really want on the lot most likely. I know their cars are now pretty nice and all, but they still do not do well at the auto auctions. I have a Toyota 4 runner and I was amazed at what they offered me for mine. I'm talking buying it from me, not a trade. I literally have driven it 10 months for 2000 dollars, that's nothing considering it was new and now it's used with 15 thousand miles on it.. I also got a great deal on it when I bought it so that helps a lot too.

Getting a great deal when buying it is what helps you the most on trade ins. I purchased my SUV, an Fx35 2011 fully loaded except for smokers package for trade in value early 2013. The dealer was going to move it to auction and I called the day before, they said come in today and you can have it for the same price! I of course jumped on it. After making payments on it at 2.8% interest over the last 2 years, I actually have thousands in positive equity. This including depreciation etc, even trading in I still make some money back :).

Negotiating trade ins on unpopular cars is a tough ordeal. Carmax also screws you on value most of the time, they want to take a big chunk off to make them more money. My best experience is dealership trade in, negotiate each deal individually, don't let them cross values and deals between car purchase and trade in.
