I found something weird

I have had my eco vert for a couple of weeks now, and while washing it today, I found something that doesn't seem right to me, but I could be wrong.
I was wiping out the wheel wells, and I noticed that the front wells are plastic lined, but the rear wheel wells are not. They are a fiberous material similar almost to cardboard, but with a rough texture. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Or am I missing my rear wheel wells completely? Any one who has a vert, will you pleases check yours out and tell me if you have the same thing in the rear wells?

it just seems strange to me because that material doesn't look like it would hold up to wet weather very well. But hey, I guess they know what they are doing. I've never noticed that on any other car I have owned.

Anybody think about spraying 3M underbody coating on the rear wheel wells? I was thinking this might help during the winters months with rain. In the NW we have rain 9 months out of the year. Thoughts?

I have that stuff on my 2007. Still looks fine.

I have that stuff on my 14 GT as well and I thought the same thing about it when I first saw it. So far it seems to be holding up fine. There is metal behind it.

I have rinsed road salt off a number of times from this past winter's travels. It looks fine. My wife's Kia Soul also has this same material.

There was a study many years ago that lining wheel wells with a absorbent carpet material cut down on the mist and spray tha comes off tires...that might be part of the reason it's there...my 13 had the same stuff...it's actually pretty good, sand will just fall off it when dry...
