5w50 is too thick for the street. 5w40 should be the thickest you run on a street and it will work well for hpde. The only time 5w50 is good is when you have the skills to push a car on a pro level skill set, still too thick for the street. 5w40 will be plenty for the vast majority

Hope youre using amsoil or pennzoil ultra in that weight. Motorcrafts will not take that abuse.

have you seen oil results that indicate that? i have no prob dumping in some pennzoil if thats the case...
I used to be a master tech at ford up until 2013 when i made a switch to bmw. I have seen failures from motorcraft on their performance models. Its common knowledge not to run a 20w oil at the track unless its amsoil or ultra. Not many 20ws take that abuse well. If you doubt me check svt performance

I don't know if I'm the best driver in the world, but I drive the crap out of my car at my skill level. It's very easy to over heat the oil, and it's thinning out to much and blow out the valve cover like Lisa Ann on set of her lastest film! I've talked to cortex, Watson, and SVT and they say it's from G forces. I just want to stop the heavy amount of blow by I get. It drips out of the intake(MMR) and fills my catch can up in 10 mins, I also plan on going from 7800 RPM to 7200 to see if that helps? If the 5-50 doesn't do it I will go back, but it my last resort at his time.

apex, I see you are in AZ so you are running HPDEs in hotter temps than say myself who is in Washington. Do you think that has something to do with your oil issues?

We ran the car all over the country last year. It's been an issue from day one. I'm just hard on the car :) I was also suggested for extreme driving to only run 7 qts. in the car, I'm alittle leery about this one. I need to try the petersons catch can from Watson racing.

Thanks. I see that Mishimoto is coming out with a catch can for the GT. The Ecoboost guys have praised the Mishimoto on their cars.

Everyone will have an opinion about this but I've only run both 5-20 OEM and 5-20 Mobil 1 over multiple miles and track events. My samples always come back fine. I've run it to almost the Yellow on oil temp in a session. The clearances are extremely tight in these motors, not a fan of thicker viscosity as a work around for running an oil outside it's operating parameters. Thicker oil can cause more damage than good. IF Ford still listed a different oil for track use, I would use it. I understand previous generations recommended 5-50, '15 saw many engineering changes and no alternative recommendations. I know a lot of people that run 0 weights, which is fine until the additive package that makes it a 40 or 50 on the other end breaks down and it begins approaching a 0 weight.

In my samples that were run longer than specified for track use I've lost less than a point at 100C.

Again, just my opinion based on experience and the fact that straight 40W oil is run in 5-10 Million Dollar 4000-6000HP power plants for extended periods at very high temperature and obviously much larger bearing clearances. After 30K hours of operation the rod bearings look brand new.

Depends on the use of the car, where you live/weather conditions, how experienced you are, your on track oil temps, etc...

For most beginner/intermediate drivers, factory fill is fine. For more advanced drivers living in the South and never see freezing temperatures, XW50 is fine on the street if you let the oil warm up before beating on it, and not redline it at startup with a cold engine.

I would never run a 40 or 50 weight oil in an engine that wasn't designed for it. On the track it wastes power; generates excessive heat and usually ends up shearing down to a lower grade. These engines are designed for oils closer to 20 weight. If you are worried about high temperature protection, run Redline 5W-20 and change it out about twice as often as you would a regular oil. It's a very heavy 20 weight and will live at 300 degrees all day long. Also keep in mind that a thinner oil flows more volume than a thicker oil at a given pressure. This provides better protection and better cooling as more oil is getting to where it is needed.

I'm a fan of both the Motorcraft and Pennzoil Ultra oils. That being said, I would never run them at the track if I thought I'd be pushing 250 degrees for any amount of time.

The 2013 and 2014 GT Track Pack cars ran 5W-50 from the factory and they were identical to the regular GT cars as far as engine internals and tolerances. These engines will absolutely take 40 or 50 weight oil just fine and it's highly recommended if you're doing any kind of HPDE work. For the street unless you're not NA I'd stick to 20 or 30 weight.

I just run 0W-40 Amsoil SS year round.
