Posted about my diff bushing being torn yesterday but never noticed any real sounds. Come to work this A.M and I have a weird clunk that seems like it comes from the rear, sometimes the front and sometimes under the driver seat ONLY when slowing down in 1-2nd gear.

car is silent as a house at highway speeds, no weird vibrations except for exhaust which is normal. It only happens when coming to a stop.

any ideas? Is it driveline slop? The drive shaft, transmission? Clutch?

bad control arms? :( always something with this car man.

Manual or auto? I was going to say the clutch, but could be a number of things. The diff bushings can cause clunking noises if they are worn or torn.

Manual car. 57k miles original clutch. The diff bushings (driver side) is ripped. You think that’s the problem? I could see it but the noises seem so random.

It could be. Also, if you have the PP, there could be some driveline slop if it has developed play. Worth checking out, IMO.

where do I start? I have the steeda bushing inserts on the way. I just don’t even know where to start. My front control arms are still factory. Wonder if that could be it too.

also when you said clutch, did you mean like it’s worn to the point it’s doing that? I don’t have any slippage or anything. That’s why I’m curious. Thank you

Is it a low clunk or a high ping? Is it when braking to slow down or when coasting? Is it when shifting between 1-2? Are there any bumps involved or is the road smooth? Are you going straight or changing directions?

The rear really shouldnt clunk when you’re not shifting (you might get a 1-2 clunk when shifting which is normal)

I just notice whilst slowing down. It only does it or is audible enough in the 5-25mph zone. It’s so infrequent. It’s just like a quiet clunk.

I do have the typical 1-2 sloppy shift clunk but it’s not that. It’s purely when coasting at those low speeds. I would think if it was driveline related I’d get some sort of vibration or really bad consistent noise right?

my front brakes are due to be replaced in the coming month (still waiting for them to ship) as they’re pretty low but I noticed the clunk after I went to my full steeda pro action setup with their adjustable endlinks.

im going to see if I can crank and tighten the endlinks more. Wondering if they’re starting to loosen over time and vibration from the road. I know Swaybar endlinks are picky about torque.

Anything in specific you think I can check? Or just install the bushing diff inserts and go from there?

Well I doubt the bushing inserts are your problem, they’re more likely to add noise.

You gotta debug it and find whats clunking.

Endlinks are worth a shot. Take a torque wrench and get under there and check the torque on all the rear suspension bits.

Wheel hubs (esp 2017 ones) dont last forever. They can make noise when speeding up or slowing down at low speed but its usually a pop or ping, not a clunk.

Good luck.

From my experience with a brand new ordered 2019 and brand new ordered 2020 both manuals, a lot of clunking is normal. From new my two transmissions both sounded and made the same weird noises and clunks. Low speed clunks, but not always repeatable in the same scenarios.

So yeah, I would say a lot of clunking is normal. I learned to embrace it as a sign of a manual transmission doing its thing. I don't think other people really hear it outside of the car.

You can feel all the driveline lash in mine when you let off the gas at low speed and the throttle closes. Doesn't make an audible clunk but you can still feel it. Been like that since new iirc

I would agree with that. I get the same stuff on both since new. Both engines also typrewriter ticked after their first oil change in the exact same way/sounds.
