On my way from Atlanta to Savannah GA once I got down to what looked like sorta past the E when I arrived at a gas station. I went more miles than the car said I could, maybe like 3-4. I filled up almost max tank. Probably should have stopped sooner but I was in a "law enforcement free" zone that seemed to stretch for a while (this was the Mexico leg).
I haven't let my tank get to empty since I was a teen.... My friends father has been a mechanic since I can remember and informed me about the ill effects... I never let it get below 1/4 tank..
Fuel Pump uses fuel to keep cool, no fuel in tank pump runs hotter.
All sentiments and dirt fall to bottom of tank, low fuel and the pump will pick it all up.
I believe there might be one or two more things he mentioned but these are what stuck in my memory..
Anyway FYI. I ran mine down to close to 1/8th of a tank and got like 2.5 gallons left.
So the gauge is pretty accurate. When it says E it IS empty unlike the one on my FJ.
Anyway the amount is irrelevant because it's based on your MPG so if you get like 10MPG by doing track days the warning light will turn on earlier.
I would not go lower than 1/8 of a tank. 1/4 is a bit too early.
Half tank for me is empty enough, I hit the gas station at half tank lol Sometimes if I am near my Costco and I still have 75% left ill just fill it up because if gas skyrockets to $5 tomorrow then at least I filled up when it was $2.5.
Attached are pictured taken of my 2011 GT and my 2017 GT350 at 12 miles to empty (for the GT350, I was about a mile from the gas station at the time of the picture, so it was 12 MTE at fill up).
14.439 gallons were required to fill up the 2011 GT for this tank, and with a hand-calculated 32.29 MPG on that tank (the highest ever on that car), at 12 MTE it could have traveled another 50.4 miles if all 16 gallons of fuel in the tank was accessible.
15.136 gallons were required to fill up the 2017 GT350, and with a hand-calculated 23.93 MPG, it could have travelled 20.7 miles at 12 MTE if all 16 gallons of fuel in the tank was accessible (and I did not care about burning up the fuel pump).
So, if the above is similar for other Mustangs of the same model years, there is a lot less reserve fuel left in the tank with the newer Mustangs when they get close to 0 miles to empty, so there is probably a greater chance of the fuel pump overheating - unless of course the GT350 comes with a slightly higher capacity gas tank.
I think that the chart referenced in the original post is describing when the low fuel warning is displayed on the dash, how many files before the car runs out of gas. That warning appears at 50 miles to empty on both of my Mustangs.
Ran mine just a mile or two past 0 the other day. Totally didn't mean to. Filled it up at gas station and it wouldn't start back up. Took a few primes to get her back up and running again. Always fill up before you get to 0 miles. Not fun for your starter or fuel pump.
I'm not sure about my Mustang yet, but the Computer on my Tremor was pretty damn accurate, gauge on E, trip miles said 3 to empty, put in 25.7 Gallons on a 26 Gallon tank :eyebulge:
As soon as i go below 50 and the buzzer goes, i aim to fill up.
On my old Supra once run out of petrol, had to push the car to the garage, the grief i got from the ex,
I have learnt my lesson
I've hit zero numerous times and never ran out. I haven't tried to go past it though on purpose. I've probably been a mile or 2 past a few times and I've put about 15.5 gallons back in.
Not sure if the Mustang does it (I don't plan to find out, lol) but in my previous car's (07 G6) manual, it warned not to run out of fuel, and if you did the fuel pump would trip and you'd have to reset it. I believe there was a button somewhere, but whatever it was, it sounded like a real PIA.
