How does Ford avoid the Gas Guzzler Tax?

Not sure how old some of you are, but roughly 10 or so years ago, after many people complained that the EPA fuel economy estimates on the window sticker were too generous, the EPA changed the way the sticker numbers were calculated. This is explained in Poopschitz's first post.

However, in order to maintain compatibility with the tax laws, the values used for those calculations were unchanged. Basically the EPA downrates the window sticker MPG to better correlate to real world driving (using A/C was one of the changes).

So, the Mustang GT's window sticker makes it seem like it should pay the GG Tax, but that's because of the downrating. For the purposes of the tax, it actually gets better mileage and is therefore exempt.

There is also the separate CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements, where the entire fleet needs to meet some average fuel economy number. This requirement is a big driver for making the Ecoboost Mustang, and pushing it as the volume model. It drives up the Ford's CAFE, allowing them to "splurge" on less efficient models like the GT350 (and possibly the Ford GT).

Don't know how to find the exact number, but if this is simply due to curiosity, you might divide the city mileage on the window sticker by 0.8 and the highway mileage my 0.75 (these are the averages of the correction amount, as mentioned in that post by Mr. Poop).

Born in Louisiana in 1950 and migrated to Texas 20 years ago. Retired lobbyist and lawyer worked for a major energy company. What might be of some interest to readers here is the fact that after being screwed over by Pontiac years ago on a warranty issue, I wrote, testified, and passed the Lemon Law of
Louisiana in 1984. The Gas Guzzler Tax could be repealed because no legislation is written in stone. Just saying...:cheers:

Yes, so does the Hellcat. It's built into the price.
My 2013 Roush Stage 3 came with a $1,500 gas guzzler tax, also built into the sticker price.
WTF is a gas guzzler tax anyways?!?! Where does that money go? What is it used for? I think it's a scam beyond a scam. (Actually, I know it's a scam. ;))

A tax is money that the government takes from you by force. Sometimes, they give some of it back to someone, but it's usually not you.

Does anyone know if the GT350/GT350R has a gas guzzler tax built into the sticker price? I would assume they do.
