I just got an email from Hertz saying that they have a number of cities that have the Shelby GT-H Mustang. It uses the 5.0L Coyote engine but has 450 RWHP! That's incredible! They also said the GT500-H is coming soon which is rated at over 900 RWHP! What's the deal with Hertz and Ford? They must have some "in" with Ford, though I know long ago Hertz primarily carried Ford products like the way Avis used to carry primarily GM products. I wonder what it would cost to rent one of those?

You positive that 450 is RWHP?

Hertz has been renting mustangs since the 60s. People used to rent them, install roll cages, race them and then return them. Or wreck them and thank god they got the insurance…

Old news. Hertz and Shelby history goes back to the 60's. They rekindled their business relationship for the 2006 GT-H, then again in 2016. Hertz hasn't been shy about advertising the newest Shelby's they're offering either.

I was seriously looking at getting a 2016 GT-H when Hertz was selling them out of their rental fleet in 2019, but financially the timing didn't work for me. I'll be watching their sale listings closely in a couple years though, the rental Shelby's should be hitting the market by then.

Yeah, that collaboration goes way back to the 60's.
You might find this interesting. He has a series on the car.

This article I've hyperlinked below had just come out earlier this year in May. It has more fact than the typical fiction and myths about the 60's Hertz Rent-A-Racer Shelby GT350's. Here it is in full for those who missed the article.

Article courtesy of Hagerty and Author Greg Kolasa:
https://www.hagerty.com/media/autom...-gt350h-fact-fiction-and-hertzs-rent-a-racer/

Many also don't know that the GT350H wasn't only "black and gold", nor where they only equipped with automatic transmissions.

The Hagerty article is long, but it's an excellent read for those who just don't know the history behind the original Hertz Mustangs.

Enjoy.

Yes, that's why I was intrigued. The blurb clearly stated "450 RWHP" on the GT-H and "over 900 RWHP" on the GT500-H. I've found other media articles that states clearly that the GT500-H has "over 900 HP" compared to the stock GT500 that's rated "over 700 HP". It went on to say that Shelby replaced the stock supercharger with a "bigger one" which partly accounts for the increase of HP. That article seems to indicate it's engine HP at the crank rather than RWHP. Perhaps whoever wrote the copy of that announcement I read made an error by citing "RWHP" after each HP rating. If that's the case, the GT-H has the same output as the standard GT which lost a bit compared to the earlier models with 460 HP. But, clearly the GT500-H is more powerful than the stock GT500.

Yeah all they changed on the GT-H was put a cat back on it and they aren’t claiming an increase, so the 450 is crank hp.

not to mention a few of the more *ahem* enterprising young men back then would rent the car, swap engines over the weekend and return it with the non-high performance drivetrain 🥸

I couldn't say what a car in that condition should price for, but $20K appears a tad excessive, to say the least.

I noticed in the list of equipment it states "Hill Start Assist". I can see having it on a manual trans, but on an automatic?

That Hertz was also on another site too, it's gone now from the site I saw it on so it probably has sold.

I wonder if one of our overseas friends had picked it up and will tackle the rebuild?

@ $19k and if the buyer is capable of doing all their own work - that car (believe it or not) still has value. It doesn't have salvage or rebuild title - it's clean. It also doesn't have any front end damages to the engine or frontal blown airbags - which is another plus. Being it is a very low Hertz build # as well, once that car is repaired, it's going to have value for reselling it or even future value if held onto.

Yes it most likely has a marred VIN for insurance payout and/or the claim - so any VIN reporting agency will have that documented history. But for someone who wants one, they'll still buy as VIN history does not matter to people in that category.

The Seller is well known and specializes in salvage/wreck resells and also has many vehicles listed.
