Headlight seperation

Hello,

Anyone separated their headlights so that they can install halo's or multi-color drl led's? Purchased the DRL Led bars and the instructions say that I have to separate the headlights to install. Is it a hard process to do?

Just stick it in the oven for a certain amount of time until you get the glue soft. There are some YouTube videos on how to do this process for other cars but it should apply to these as well.

Just stick it in the oven for a certain amount of time until you get the glue soft. There are some YouTube videos on how to do this process for other cars but it should apply to these as well.

^ this method won't work well for our headlights due to the sealant used. It will work but in the process you will warp/damage the plastic and run the risk of it not going back together smoothly and sealing, even with additional sealant.

I have spoke to several DD installers and DD themselves and they recommend cutting the housing, NOT THE LENS! You cut just behind the seam on the black section of the housing and then seal that back up later.

Google how to do that or give them a call and they can recommend someone in your area to do it.

Our headlights are sealed using permaseal, and if you've ever dealt with it in the past you know that heating in the oven is not an effective/efficient method.

It will cool too fast and need constant reheating throughout the process. Also, you have a greater chance of warping/bending/breaking the plastic housing making resealing difficult or impossible.

I asked multiple installers, and all of them told me the best method is to cut the black housing section, NOT THE LENS, and then reseal.

I've seen some use a heat knife instead of the dremel so that you don't get all that excess material cut away from the wheel and it looked like a pretty clean removal. I wonder if any of the big lighting firms do it legit by cutting the permaseal and not cutting into any of the actual headlight. I'm sure it's a lot slower but it wouldn't leave any signs the headlight has been cut into.

If they are cutting the black back side of the housing, the plastic is probably reheated and in a sense plastic welded back together.

Any good weather sealant would work as long as it will bond to plastic. I would recommend something that you could bake later to easily separate

For opening, you may be able to do it without cutting; that's the TLF did mine. There are various videos on youtube for baking.

This one is specific to just butyl rubber, not permaseal, but the same principles apply. You just have to bake longer.
