How necessary are the 1400HP DSS vs the 800HP at 700whp?

The 1400's are only like $300 more right?

why would you not just go ahead and spend that $300 and never ever have to worry about upgrading?

I don't disagree but I also don't see me heading over 800whp either.

That's pretty much our thoughts on it. When we started our build we knew we would put a Whipple on at some point but really didn't know what our end goal was. 600rwhp, 700rwhp, 800+rwhp??

At that point we figured the 1400hp ones were probably the better fit for us. No sense is having to do something twice. Just get it done right the first time and you never have to worry about it.

With that said I personally have never seen a DS 800hp shaft fail so putting them on a 700rwhp car really wouldn't concern me.

Are the 800HP axles noticeably bigger than the stock ones? Guessing the stock ones have a margin of safety in them (not designed to break at 436 HP, lol).

Anyone have the diameter/type of steel breakdown for stock vs. 800 vs. 1400 HP shafts?

I'm sure the 1400hp axles are heavier than the 800hp axles. You can buy a new set of gt350 axles for $400 now. I'm not sure how strong they are though.

I broke the DSS 800's when I was making 700rwhp. I think it was more of a fluke because it broke in the middle, so there was probably a part of the metal that didn't cure correctly during manufacturing.

I now have the 1400's; I didn't weigh them but I don't think they're any heavier than the 800's. If I'm correct I think the 1400's are just cryo treated and go through a heavier curing process.

The 800s are rated to 1000HP and it is not the HP that breaks them it is TQ. TQ punishes everything. Curious what the 800 half shafts would handle in TQ. Either way I am happy with this power level I am at. In March will be going E85 so will enjoy this winter on 93.
