I consider the camera to be more of a safety feature (like not running over the neighbor's kids) rather than a parking aid. The beeps for proximity are nice, but I'm mostly using mirrors when I back into a spot or my garage, or parallel park. And the side mirrors make it look like you're closer to the curb than you actually are IMO.

Also give yourself some room at the curb, I always see people parking with the tire within an inch of the curb. The law is like 18 inches bros...
12 in many places... depends on the law. But I agree, you don't have to get right up on it...

What I'd tell the OP is to do what I did... go to an empty church parking lot during the day and practice for an hour or so.

I also have my memory seat button #3 set to push my mirrors all the down. Well, not used this in a while now.

The camera is great though, once you practice as I said above... once you KNOW where the lines are and how close you are, you are golden. I use the camera now more than mirrors. Will use mirrors when it is raining outside and the camera is all muddy.

Go someplace and practice... it makes perfect.

Angle your mirrors down to see the curb better.
+1 i use the camera to help with backing up so i don't hit something but angle the mirrors down so i can see the tires and curb.

My worry is that the more the distance from the curb the chances are higher that some idiot driving by could side swipe my car

 The law is like??? The DMV says if you are more than 18 inches from the curb you fail the parking test. Most folks who can drive know you get about 6 inches from the curb and consider that good parking. Great parking can get you closer without scraping a wheel. :headbang:

Thanks for clearing that up, way to deliver on the technical details. I don't know how I've survived this long parallel parking in San Francisco and such without issue.

There is such a thing as too close for reasonably easy entry and exit to your car. Having to step directly onto a 5" or taller curb because there isn't enough room at pavement level doesn't fit this criteria very well. It's worse than 'not reasonably easy' when you're either older or have bad knees.

The camera is a handy tool, particularly at night or in a parking garage. My rule of thumb is six inches of leeway. Like all the others have said, the mirrors are your friends, always double check. One guy here had a great idea for those with memory seats. He set position three so the mirror would pick up the curbs when backing up. Genius!
Great idea. I think you have to switch the ignition off to recall position 3

No, you just can't be moving. Stop, push memory button to lower mirrors, park, push normal seat/mirror button.

If you use memory 3 do you have switch the ignition off to recall setting 3?

No, on a manual you must be in neutral and stopped to switch between saved positions. Engine running doesn't matter, the feature is disabled when the car is in motion.

I park curbside daily. I'm still a stock Base GT. Here's my parking life hack.

When I back in parallel, I put the green/yellow/red line on the crease of the curb and it gives me a perfect 5-6 inches away, everytime. Parallel being the operative word.

When pulling in forward along a curb, I'll throw it in reverse long enough to pop the camera view to see where I'm setting once I stop where I think I want to be.

If I had a Premium, I'd be programming mine rather than posting this.

I'm in the camp of 'use the green camera lines as representing the car's width'. The white bendy lines are the tire tracks, the green/yellow/red is the body width, and it seems quite accurate.

So if you put the green line just streetside of the curb, the wheel tracks should be spaced away a little.

Course, this all goes to hell at night, am I right?

BTW, Premium model does not guarantee memory seats, unfortunately. I would love memory seats for the GF.

I believe in the owner's manual there is a section that discusses the back up camera as well as how to adjust the visual aids.

I also have a 2016 and honestly, my camera seems to be spot on with regards to the comments made above by "dev1360".
