They said they look like they bolt up but the valves will hit the cylinder walls. The valves in the Voodoo were spread further apart so... while it will directly bolt up, it will not operate.

A shorter stroke is the only option...

Looking into this now, there is no Camaro answer to a FPC V8 GT350. A pushrod engine floats the valves without extensive valve train work. A DOHC is badly needed at GM. Every minute they don't invest in V8 OHC technology, they fall farther behind. They can't just pour on the displacement anymore, this will be a huge challenge for them.

If the Power to Weight figures were true, the GT350R could be just under 3550lbs. DI adds about 3-4lbs to the engine, a smaller crank will help a tiny bit... I would like to see them shed the GG Tax with a short stroke Voodoo (Voodoo Child) so they can make use of that $1300 elsewhere.

The Base GT350 could give the z28 some trouble. Eliminating shift points during a lap is a big deal.
So giving a Coyote the 5.2 bore would allow them to fit.....? Destroking the 5.2 would be a winner in my book. Better rod to stroke ratio. Less kenetic energy do to slower piston speeds....and slightly less over all mass. The shorter stroke would have been easier to balance too. Wonder why Ford chose the path that they took?

Breaking the 5 liter milestone...

The needed every cube they could get their hands on - (better) torque, I believe, was the aim. Sure it's more powerful than LS7 but still has quite a torque/power deficit before the 7 litre runs out of breath. Any more cubes and FPC may not have happened.

Destroking would mean they'd be wanting to make peak power over 8500rpm; it may make more power but torque would suffer and would be crucified with only 6 gears to play with. Perhaps one day we'll get that 650hp FPC five-o with the ten speed box :D

This 5.2... as much as it loves revs... it's a torque monster. More torque than any LS3. They may not be saying much but let that sink in for a bit. They've done a brilliant job with it.

12-13 cubes wouldn't have done much. Increased valve spacing allows for larger valves, decreased valve shrouding and more crack resistant valve seats. The extra cubes is just a small benefit.

Fal has a good point. Torque looked like it took some priority over peak HP. The extra bore probably helped.

DI or PDI will fix any torque deficits a traditional FPC usually experiences.

Either way, this first Gen Voodoo is competitive with the 430's 4.5.

80% of torque on the 4.5 is above 3250rpm while 90% of the Voodoo's is above 3750rpm. It has 30-35 more HP and revs about 700rpm higher but, the Voodoo has a 30-35tq advantage.

One has DI, the other doesn't.

The Voodoo is a world class attempt, don't forget that in any discussion.

I was out for a sunny drive in the country yesterday with the grandsons in my 86 GT (275 RWHP) when we came up on a gorgeous Z28. Black with a dark dint. Couldn't see anything inside. He was poking along about 5 km over the limit on a beautifully paved hilly and windy road.

The clamor from the impatient grandsons began. 'Go around him Papa'.

I patiently followed him closely through some curves and over some blind hills. Suddenly we crested a hill and there was a perfectly straight and open road that would have given me 10 minutes to pass him.

I put on my signal and waited for him to take off. Nothing! 'GO AROUND HIM PAPA!' 'IT'S JUST A CAMARO!' I couldn't resist any longer. I pulled the AOD back to 2nd gear and stomped it. I was around him instantly. He just sat there.

A little farther up we come up to a green light at a crossroad. I slowed because of turning traffic. The Z28 goes around me quickly on the right and has to brake suddenly for a turning truck. I catch a quick glimpse of an elderly couple. I think I heard her scream.

What a waste!

Finally, something worth reading. Thanks for the story.

Good news is, the GT350R-C is allowed a 3350lbs Race Weight (3575lbs for the z28).

But, it inherited a 58mm restrictor (almost the same as the Boss, 60mm z28).

Still a 8200rpm engine.

Also...

2-1.1
Eligible Cars are ordinarily those described in manufacturer’s catalogs, produced at a minimum rate of 500 units per year, and available for purchase through normal dealer outlets in the U.S. 30 days or more prior to competing in an Event. Exemption from minimum production requirements must be approved by IMSA.
2-1.2
IMSA approves Cars for competition based on findings that determine a Car’s capability to be competitive. New car or model eligibility requests must be made directly to IMSA and may be made at any time. New approvals are not eligible for competition until such time as IMSA updates the SCR listing such new additions.
First, this is a 500 vehicle minimum production run/For sale before the event waiver. The z28 had this waiver its first year.

The second waiver is a No Competition waiver. I believe this means that it will not be competing for position, a win or points. The rest of the season is Live Run development like the Boss 302.

Don't like the weight break vs the z28. Don't like the idea of the z28 having a larger restrictor plate. Heads up all the way.

60mm restrictor on a 90mm TB.

Vs.

58mm restrictor on an 84mm TB.

58mm meaning the overall diameter of the restrictor.

cool, I already got my weekend pass, so I will do my best to take some pics/record some sounds.

The CTSCC Event in Mosport is next, July 11th at 1:25pm. Practice and Qualifying is on the 10th.

Yes, it will absolutely be there...
