GT350 Engine/Oil Usage/Fix thread.

I am very sorry to hear your new problem. Lightning strikes twice. If they do wind up replacing the engine insist on replacing the catalytic converters as well. Ford replaced mine with no fight.

Ford replaced my engine last week for excessive consumption. A quart every 80 miles and getting worse. It ran strong but like Mcarsfan said the pipes were black. The new engine is not using any oil up to this point. Most of the weekend was spent running in the new engine. 500 miles so far on the clock and the dip stick level is right where it should be.

Silly question, you know how you are supposed to soak the filter with oil when doing the oil change, is that included in the 10 quarts or not? Because my filter took a good half a quart and I only poured 9.5 quarts to the engine.

10 quarts includes the filter.

If I also need a new engine, I will just sell the car or lemon it. No way I am going through with this and in the end get a no VIN no signature engine on this car.

I filled up the oil filter which took 1/2 quarts. I was saying somehow maybe the engine actually might be taking 10.5 instead of 10 because the filter itself takes half a quart. Because if this were true then it means it didnt burn any oil instead I didnt put enough.

But you are saying thats not the case.

How bad is too bad for this engine? Can this get better or is it going to keep burning oil at the same rate now?

Well it looks like I was also burning oil. Added half quart and went from min to middle of min and max. This is after 900 miles since the last oil change.

The exhaust pipes (only the inner ones) are black (although no black smoke is ever present). I m confused why only inner pipes are black as I drive in sport mode 99% of the time.

The inner pipes are the valved ones. They're basically straight through and unmuffled. That's why it sounds so drastically different when the valves are opened. The outer pipes take the maze through the muffler and get a filtering effect as a result. All that soot is just accumulating inside the muffler.

Even when the oil is in the filter the stick should still show full. Are you checking the oil immediately after shut down? It'll take a few minutes for the oil to return to the pan. And is the car on level ground?

Ive never heard that before. On lots of cars the oil filter isnt oriented to hold much oil(meaning if you fill it, most of it will leak out before you get it on)

Check the oil after you fill it run it and let it cool down. And then after that make sure you are checking in exactly the same place and when the engine is cold. Its pretty hard to say you are .5 down with any certainty

No oil consumption at all in 3500 miles. Using Amsoil.

The inline 6 cylinder never burns any oil. I owned the M3 as well and it all comes to the engine design and the cylinder heads and crankshaft. V8s just naturally has this problem a lot more.

The only exception to the 6 cylinder rule is porsche's old boxter engine, mezger. That one also burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles.

You are showing your ignorance again. Having owned an 85 911, 95 993, 04 GT3, 02 GT2, 05 GT3 all with flat 6 that did not burn any meaningfull amount of oil and the GT2 and GT3's were track cars.

I have two friends one with a 997.1 turbo and another with 997.2 gt3, both carry at least a qt of oil with them. Turbo goes through so much oil, every time I see this guy he is topping it off. I have never owned these cars or dont know enough about them. What I was saying was based on my experiences and observations.

I dont think 997 series mezger is on your list though. Totally different engine.

I have checked it cold/warm/hot. Checked it in my garage, shopping mall, gas station.

My pipes are black though (inner ones), so its clearly doing something with all that oil.

I guess I'll keep observing and see what happens.

My inner pipes are black, too, but not the outside ones or less so. The inner pipes are the pipes that open up in sports mode. Wonder what this means.

[MENTION=19530]Voodooo[/MENTION] I checked my dipstick (at least 15 min after the car stopped running) right when I picked it up from the dealer when my engine was replaced. So I have a baseline from then. I 30~ miles, and checked it again later that day when I got home (all on level ground). Since then I've done 500~ miles and a lot of acceleration up to 8200~ and engine braking too. I'm slowly seeing the level on the dipstick go down every 100~ miles. I haven't topped it off yet, and I haven't done my first oil change on this engine yet.

With my original engine I did the oil change myself and used Motorcraft. I already bought another case of Motorcraft to use with this new engine when I do the oil change in the next couple weeks. I'm going to monitor oil usage closely after my first change, and will keep in mind checking the spark plugs if it's bad.
