1st oil change at 1200 miles. No oil consumption issues that I was paying any attention then.

Oil change at dealer: 10 Qts. Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w50 with Motorcraft spec filter.

Have added 2 Qts during during next 2100 miles. Have begun to monitor oil usage more closely since the oil cooler recall.

I guess it's using about 1Qt. every 1200 miles or so. No oil leaks and no noticeable signs of oil burning.

My previous G37S was as oil thirsty as the Vodoo.

Would like to also add that BMW now says its "normal" for their V8 engines, namely M5/M6 to consume up to 1qt of oil per 1250km (800 miles).

Now those engines are twin turbo and there is a lot of blowback to the intake but everyone knows that blowback is probably 5-10% of that oil consumption.

One thing I also want to ask is, this dipstick is extremely hard to use due to that strut brace being in the way. What exactly is considered the "level", because sometimes there is more traces of oil between the two dots but towards the low level dot the oil is thicker. Not sure how to read this. I tried flipping the dipstick the other way, but then it shows way too low, like below the first hole. I dont know which one to believe

I know the S55 is a totally different engine than what is in the M5/6. But I never ran catch cans on either of my M3 or M4. Neither of those cars used any noticeable amount of oil and I tracked both of them a bit. Lucky I guess.

As you know, BMW uses break in oil until 1200 miles. My dealer talked to FP about using a break in oil in my new Voodoo and they still told them not to bother.

Not sure if you realized this but the only oils that meet Fords spec for use in the Shelby is Ford's own oil, and Amsoil. If engine failure were to occur, the dealership would have on record the oil you used and Ford now has an excuse to hang you out to dry.

Agreed, it is a bit of a pain in the ass to get to and read. It stays really hot for a long time as well.

I was told by my dealer and FP to use the "better" of the two readings. It takes my 3-4 times to get a good enough reading that I trust.

The inline 6 cylinder never burns any oil. I owned the M3 as well and it all comes to the engine design and the cylinder heads and crankshaft. V8s just naturally has this problem a lot more.

The only exception to the 6 cylinder rule is porsche's old boxter engine, mezger. That one also burns about a quart of oil every 1000 miles.

I don't believe this is correct. My own dealer said go to the parts store and get what is recommended in the manual. I have a buddy that is the manager of a parts store and he had only one choice that met the requirements and weight etc.

That being said, I did stick with Motorcraft.

But what exactly do you consider the actual level? See there is traces of oil throughout the entire stick, that happens because of rubbing I guess as you pull it. Those traces get thicker and wider towards the real measurement area but only touch each other at the very bottom of the stick. I wish the dipstick went in straight and not at an angle.

I would usually get one nice reading. Otherwise I would use the best one out of a few tests and average them out. I got pretty good at it and I knew that every 200 miles I would be down a 1/5 to a 1/4 of a quart. That was until recently when the usage accelerated to around a range of 500-600 miles a quart.

I myself use amsoil. If I were you guys I'd give another brand a try to see if the oil consumption changes. More oils to choose from then motorcraft

I changed mine to amsoil at 500 miles (first oilchange) . My mechanic and i did it together at his shop. Noticed it was down a quart. 12400 miles on it now I have had to add a quart every 500 miles like clockwork( two cases to date). Took it to the dealer at 1500 miles and had it checked. They did a leakdown test and used a bore scope to look around.Compression was perfect in all 8. In May they determined it was two bad valve seals and I have been waiting for the parts ever since. Exhaust tips are black however I have never noticed any smoke as I have videoed starting, accelerating and decelerating.

I am using Amsoil and have burned a quart between first change at 1000 miles and current 3250 miles. I am somewhat concerned this is a wide spread problem.

Well it looks like I was also burning oil. Added half quart and went from min to middle of min and max. This is after 900 miles since the last oil change.

The exhaust pipes (only the inner ones) are black (although no black smoke is ever present). I m confused why only inner pipes are black as I drive in sport mode 99% of the time.

Silly question, you know how you are supposed to soak the filter with oil when doing the oil change, is that included in the 10 quarts or not? Because my filter took a good half a quart and I only poured 9.5 quarts to the engine.
