A lot of racing left, however I don't think falling from P31 (start) to P47 was part of the strategy.

It's OK if they have to drop back now. For the next 20 hours, it's just about keeping your shit straight. The golden rule is don't make a little problem a big one. If you have to stop to fix something, you just do it and take your lumps early.
