I hate when riders' sayings cross the lines of motorcycle types.

"Dress for the fall, not the ride" is a sportbike/racing thing. They expect to fall... it's part of the game they play. While it could also apply in heavy city traffic, I've found that being vigilant, predictive, and riding with the attitude that everything else that moves is literally, actively trying to murder you does the best. ...and if you're good at it, you do it on 18-wheels as well as 2.

for cagers and I use my speed to keep my bike in safe zones. I will
do whatever it takes to find a spot in traffic where I have distance
from cagers. I limit my night driving too

I took it out tonight in -5c wet/icy conditions on Summer tyres.

You my friend are going to get hurt badly with that attitude.

You cannot predict asshole drivers or a slick spot in the road. ( or any of the countless other problems that can quickly arise)

I agree!

I personally knew 3 people who've died on motorcycles. All were very experienced riders. My friends Dad hit a patch of ice under a bridge, he'd ridden bikes his entire life. Woman and her husband I worked with got hit by a car, died instantly. I saw one guy who went over his handlebars when a car pulled out when it shouldn't have. He survived, but not without extensive back problems (I gave eye witness testimony). A buddy of mine came off his bike when taking a corner too low, knocked himself unconscious even though he was wearing a helmet, he was OK though.

I pretty much would never ride a motorbike (With the exception of off roading dirt bikes if I ever get the opportunity). You could be the most experienced rider on the planet, but you aren't the only one on the road and it just takes one person pulling out quickly without indicating much who didn't see you (pretty much standard procedure if you're trying to change lanes in traffic in LA).

So to me anyway.. The attitude of "my experience as a rider means I don't need to wear safety gear" is sort of laughable... Except the safety gear might not protect you that well anyway (although my buddy would be dead if he hadn't have worn a helmet).

IDC what's more vigilant.. I ride in gear as much as possible.. If people can't see the big commercial truck I drive .... I don't expect much on a motorcycle

I know tons of people that have ridden their entire lives that used to have that attitude... until some shit still happened that was out of their control and they wished they were geared up... my mesh jacket with kevlar pads and helmet have literally never made any impact on my ride except making me more comfortable.

this is coming from a 22 year old just in case you think I sound like an old dad. gear up or don't expect sympathy when we have to graft a piece of skin off someones ass to replace what used to be your face

I work in a job where daily I encounter people who hurt themselves - almost every single person I have met who had a motorcycle crash insists that its never happened to them before and that it was someone else fault. It's also pretty common that people have been riding for many years before it happens to them. So, even if only half of them are correct, it means that you can be the best rider for the longest time and bad stuff can still happen to you. Protect yourself.
