GT 95 Vs 98 RON

The fact a 2.2D X-Type I used to own could tell the difference, and show it's displeasure at, being fed regular diesel instead of V-Power means the Mustang gets 99 all the time or the 100 Racing stuff on the Continent!

In 11.5K miles it's been fed regular unleaded twice; the first fill paid for by the dealer at a petrol station so heaving I didn't really get a choice, and once up in the wilds of Scotland where there was nothing else available. (TBH I was surprised they had leccy up there but that's by the by).

Ive been mixing it up in mine.... 10 tanks of 98 followed by 10 tanks of 95 (etc).

Noticed precisely zero difference.

Once remapped, I can imagine itll be a different story, but on a std. 5.0 I reckon a decent branded 95 is just fine.

If that's what you think then why bother with the expensive stuff? :shrug:

Dont get me wrong; Dyno a car back-to-back with 95 and 98 in the tank, im fairly certain the 98 fuelled car will be making 10bhp more - but if you can feel that sort of difference in a 420bhp car, well your bottom is more sensitive than mine ;)

I wack in the more expensive stuff just cos really. I feel no improvement but makes me feel better. If there is not a pump available I use normal stuff

Dont get me wrong; Dyno a car back-to-back with 95 and 98 in the tank, im fairly certain the 98 fuelled car will be making 10bhp more - but if you can feel that sort of difference in a 420bhp car, well your bottom is more sensitive than mine ;)

On a +400bhp car.

Our old family X-trail runs V-Power diesel. Run it on regular all year it fails the MoT. Run it on V-Power all year it passes. It's that cut and dried.

The Video I watched they put a car on a Dyno with different fuels and it made no difference at all to power or CO2 etc. Only difference was the price of the fuel.

I am 95 only still.

Vpower wins both, bear in mind in above test Vpower was then 97-98 RON contained no ethanol.

Vpower is now 99 and contains 5-10% Ethanol I believe, that would result in more power again.

Since the engine "tunes" for the fuel you are using, it takes time to retune if you change. I have been told it takes about three tankfuls for the ecu to adjust...

It doesn't do it immediately in case you use a single tank of lower octane...

I've only used esso super so far.

The only reason is my Amex card gives me a fiver back if I spend over 50 quid so kinda of sets the difference in cost.

Whilst I'm 'running it in' I figured it treat it...

Interesting videos and results. I always knew higher Ron vpower was better for turbo engines such as imprezas that could take advantage of higher compression ability and advance ignition to produce more power. It does seem that the NA engines don't seem to see a benefit though...
