I've always had to pull it out and clean it before putting it back in a pulling it out again to check. :bolt:
That's what she said.....

From the supplemental manual (pg 36):
ENGINE OIL CHECK
See the scheduled maintenance information for the appropriate intervals for checking the engine oil.
1. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground.
2. Turn the engine off and wait 15 minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.
3. Set the parking brake and make sure the gearshift is securely latched in first gear.
4. Open the hood. Protect yourself from engine heat.
5. Locate and carefully remove the engine oil level dipstick.
6. Wipe the dipstick clean. Insert the dipstick fully, then remove it again.
7. Put the dipstick back in and make sure it is fully seated.
• If the oil level is between the lower and upper holes, the oil level is acceptable. DO NOT ADD OIL.
• If the oil level is below the lower hole, add enough oil to raise the level within the lower and upper holes.

Make sure you set your parking break and get your proximity suit folks

Ok so putting the dipstick in with the hash marked side facing out towards the fender then pulling it out flexing the stick Handel towards the center of the engine bay definitely provides more consistent results with less smearing on the dipstick. My oil levels look better this AM. May have been some smearing effect.

Thanks !

I check it about 5 times before I'm satisfied lol. Best way for me is to pull it out quickly while holding it up a bit with my other hand, and looking at it immediately. I don't have any issues with smearing.
^^ I agree with this method, I put the dipstick in and clean it 3-4 times and take an average. I find after a couple passes the readings are the same, this works hot or cold.
One try at every oil check will give you very inconsistent readings

You'll get different readings with the stampings inserted facing the left vs facing the right. I just do the right. If you have high oil..especially .5 quart, I'd drain some.

Its not over the top hole. I have heard of some people needing to put in 10.5 courts maybe because of the oil filter.

Also it is conceivable that in the last three thousand miles I could have burned a half a quart of oil. The motor is still pretty new. Only 4600 miles.

I pull mine out, clean it of oil, and insert it back in at 180 degrees. I then pull and read the level. For whatever reason, this makes it easy for me to see the level.

It's been my experience that my car does use some oil. Not enough to alarm me in 4200 miles but I have had to top it off. One oil change in the books at 4000 miles...an adventure for sure...

Ok so I am not the only one having this problem. My dipstick looked just like yours. I will have to try your method to see if I get better results. Thanks for posting.

Yeah, what I'm saying is that if you check your oil and the markings are on the right and it's right on the full mark and then flip the markings 180 degrees and check it, it will be over by 1/2 quart. That's what mine even does anyway , and it's consistent. I lowered the oil so that it's basically on the middle of the stick. I'm pretty OCD about stuff tho

Would've been nice to have some sort of quick release system to remove the strut tower brace. Just sayin'. :D

I absolutely hate everything about the oil dip stick. Dip stick is black (guessing like most cars), oil is light brownish, I have to look at the stick in many angles in my garage to figure out what the hell I'm looking at. I also have the driver side oil catch can. Talk about a pain in the ass.

Every time I check the oil it looks low, even after a fresh oil change. Just guessing it's because of the smearing. Going to have to try one of the tricks mentioned here to get a better reading next time.

Bingo!!! You've hit the nail right on the head about the dipstick...there is everything to hate about it...:frusty: How can they do such a good job on the car and let details like this slip through the cracks??? It's just

LOL what a bunch of whiny babies.

Put your diapers on, grab a paper towel and pull the dipstick out.

If that's too difficult pay someone to do it for you or better yet buy a Tesla.

You all should be happy that there still is a dipstick. Most, if not all new M cars don't even have dipsticks anymore.
