GT 350 Dipstick

Any of you guys having a hard time telling where the oil level is on your dipstick. It seems like everytime I check it the level is in a different place on the stick. Where is your oil level between the two dots?

I am thinking I am low. The problem is every time I pull this thing out oil smears all up and down the dipstick. Here it is it was at 10.5 quarts. I just added half a quart for 11 total. This is the dipstick.

It has been 2800 miles since my last oil change. (4600 miles total). No track events. Never noticed any oil leaks and I have been looking for them.

IIRC the owners manual says to check the oil when hot but after sitting for 15 minutes ... not how I was taught and not how I do it. I check it cold before starting. Remove the dipstick, wipe it as dry as possible, and reinsert. Wait 5-10 seconds and remove the dipstick, flexing it gently as you pull it out so as not to smear oil down the length of it and clear the strut brace. Occasionally I'll have to check it twice to satisfy myself, but not often.

Edit: Is it possible that oil has splashed or condensed up into the dipstick tube and by checking it cold I'm not seeing what you're seeing?

I've always had to pull it out and clean it before putting it back in a pulling it out again to check. :bolt:

I check it about 5 times before I'm satisfied lol. Best way for me is to pull it out quickly while holding it up a bit with my other hand, and looking at it immediately. I don't have any issues with smearing.

I am gonna recheck it in the AM. Good Lord I don't want to end up in the excessive oil consumption thread. This 5 W 50 is So thin just runs down the dipstick.

Ford could've done a better job at locating the dipstick to a more convenient location.

I too have to reinsert it a few times as to not have any oil smearing on the dipstick .

I guess i won't lose sleep over it, so no biggie, but the driver's wiper arm hitting the hood on the other hand...

I've also had the best luck checking it in the AM when cold. Spec say 10qts of oil...full dipstick cold should be 10qts:shrug: Hot allows some to still be other places throughout the engine. Very tough for me to get any kind of meaningful reading when hot. Just sayin...

I think if you put it in with that side facing down you get less of a smear

In addition to a dipstick, my 20 year old Porsche has an electronic oil level gauge which automatically shows you the oil level at each fuel filling. It can also be activated manually as required. Ford should have done this, considering all the other sensors that can be monitored. In later years, Porsche eliminated the dipstick altogether.

I do the same but not with the oil dipstick....

I get a more accurate reading without the smear on mine if I put it in with the reading facing down also.
