Going Whipple Tire and Rim size feedback please

Hey guys so I am going to finally make the jump on the stage 2 whipple. I currently have 20x10 velgen classic v2 and a 285 square setup. I love the rims but will it be a good setup for the power the car will be putting down? I actually like the look of the 19s better so does anyone have any input or experience for traction on a supercharged setup? I was kind of leaning toward 19s with 275 front and 305 rear? Thanks guys

I'm no expert, but poking around the internet, and watching physics videos on youtube years ago, I would say probably stickier tires will make more of a difference than the size, but going to 19" will also give the tire the ability to squish a little when taking off.

The contact patch surface area will be about the same even if you go wider, but if you use a wider tire, it will be shorter (front to rear) and wider (left to right). Probably the opposite of what you want. A taller tire would give you a narrower patch (left to right) but longer (front to back).

When I went to Michelin PSS they would grip in 2nd gear with the Whipple, but the Pirellis were crap.

Just my experience. If you're going to drive the car in cold weather, you probably won't get traction.

Nothing in the drag radial street class will hook in the lower gears with FI. To have a chance, you'll have to heat them up with a mild burnout.

I have a Stage II Procharger mated with a 10R80 and 3.55 Torsen rear. I don't hit boost until around 4.5K, so i am basically stock below this rpm. I estimate my rwhp around 660.

Anything under 50 mph, hitting it at 5K, and on really good asphalt I will completely loose traction, even when using 305 spec Nitto 555R2's.

It will be much worse in the lower rpm range with a Whipple.

Your 285s are not gonna put power down under 70 mph. 19's with 305's will be marginally better, but you're gonna want a drag pack if you're serious about consistently putting power down.

Just for clarity I am just using this car on weekends and night drives. Not racing or anything. But I’d love some input on the 19s bc although I love the velvens they don’t make them in 19.

I taller tire of the same width is better and reduce the drive line gear ratio. Have Whipple stage 1 and run Michelin PS4 315/30/20. My car 3.31 rear gears with 6 speed auto.
Still have to be careful until 40 MPH.

I hope your Whipple runs better than mine did. They couldn't get it to run right, blamed a cam shaft phaser (even though the car ran perfectly fine prior to supercharger install), and I ended up selling the kit to another member on this forum. He stated it also didn't run right on his car. That was two big sad faces...

Oh man. I hope there are no issues. As is the car is at only 8k miles. I’m trying to do it all the right way.

Yeah. It’ll probably be fine, but mine ended up being extremely stressful. I sold it for $3,500 after spending months trying to figure it out, removing it, putting the car back to stock, reinstalling it, removing it again… Loosing $5,500 was hard on me.

Street tires are street tires. Some are better than others but if you want real traction, like someone else stated, you'll need some good drag radials. I myself am looking into getting some so this is a good thread.

This will be a weekend driver. I don’t plan to race or anything. But I would like to have reasonable traction. Idk if I should sell my current setup of 20x285 and get a staggered 19x 275 and 305? Plus it might look better?

I have a Whipple Gen 5 on my 2015 GT PP - I still have the PP 19's on the car. I did buy the AM PP 10" wide knock-offs to run a 19" 275 Nitto DR. There's no comparison between my street Indy 500s versus swapping out the rears with the DRs. Night and day predictibility on the streets when hitting the fun pedal on the NIttos.
