My grand daughter just brought home some propaganda from her school. It says coal is bad due to mining and oil is bad because it pollutes the atmosphere. Also claims fossile fuels are not renewable because it takes millions of years for it to be made. I do believe this year is a million years from a million years ago. So... well I'll let you fill in the blank.

It then goes on to say wind and solar are good, never mentioning that mining is part of the so called green energy. I sat her down and gave her all the facts and I will let her make up her own mind. She said she is going to ask her teacher about the things I told her and will let me know what is said. Hopefully this teacher is based in fact and not emotion.

Heat pumps have become the eco fiasco of the decade (msn.com)

Hello; I was puzzled about the title as I have a heat pump (HP) and it does sort of work. I thought the problem would be how inefficient they become as the outside temperatures become extreme. Somewhere around freezing temps my HP resorts to old fashioned resistance heating coils. These coils are like the burners on an electric stove, perhaps the most expensive to heat with electricity.
But i was wrong. The problems appear to be in part because the country has not been destroyed by war in many decades.

Hello; I agree with your hope for an unbiased teacher.

Can you explain this? I cannot connect the dots between a heat pump and war. Unless it pertains to newer infrastructure.

By the end of the decade, we may well be forcing people to rip out old heating systems. (from sk's link)

I'll bet Gregs is just giddy about forcing people to rip out perfectly good heating systems.

Hello; The way i read the bit is they have a lot of very old homes not easy to insulate and often without an outside place to put the the external coils of a heat pump. Also, I guess running ductwork could be an issue, but there are ductless units around now.
But you are correct it is about infrastructure. A logical way to deal with such things is to have rules for new construction only, but we all know the agendas do not favor logic with set deadlines.

From the Telegraph

Just admit that Britain isn’t ready for heat pumps

The Government simply hasn’t thought through its net zero strategy – and we could end up paying through the nose to live in chillier homes

One day we may look back to the winter of 2022/23 as a golden age, when most of us could still afford to keep warm. Yes, you did read that correctly. We may be in a cost of living crisis, provoked by a surge in wholesale gas prices following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. But compared with what is to come, it is nothing. We may have to do without a few luxuries and turn down the thermostat a degree or two

Unfortunately the rest is behind a paywall.

Having just installed new HVAC last summer, and living in Minnesota where the cold sucks half the year, you can readily imagine what my reaction will be if some knothead decrees that I give up my natural gas heat....

Is anybody suggesting that?

The only thing along these lines in the UK is that trials are ongoing to replace natural gas with hydrogen, it costs very little to convert from natural gas to hydrogen as it is a relatively simple process changing the burner / control logic and the pipework is all cross compatible. The source of the hydrogen is obviously important.

But it isn't like gas explosions never happen!

(Chicago;2,500sf 2-story full basement)-I just installed a new Bosch 18 SEER dual-fuel heat pump System in the middle of January. 8 days remaining for my Feb/Mar bill and I’ve only used a total of 50 therms of gas.

That's a little strange in a State that "stands by it's fossil". Maybe the schools are leaning in a different direction than the elected politicians. I'll have to find out what the curriculum is around here.

Shouldn't schools be teaching unbiased evidence based information. What have state or national politics got to do with it?
