Found this tidbit out while researching problems with the Getrag Chinese manufactured MT82 gearbox found in every Ford Mustang GT since 2011. Apparantly, when problems with the original Getrag MT82 started reaching complaints in the hundreds, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into the problems (which was later dropped...) after Ford sent out two Technical Service Bulletins (TSB 11-3-18 and TSB 10-19-4) relating to the complaints of hard shifting when cold, vibrations, noise, and ratcheting shifts. TSB 11-3-18 required nothing more than a servicing of the gearbox by removal of the transmission fluid and switching to Ford Motorcraft Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid (a ligher standard 75W gearbox fluid). Conversely, the Ford Motorcraft Transmission Fluid servicing charts were modified to include a notation that a "Friction Modifier" called XL-18 be added to all subsequent MT82 services (this notation and service item does not appear on the original TSB and the only reference to XL-18 is in the Transmission Fluid Charts under Note 6). XL-18 is used during the build-up phase of the transmission in China and it is assumed that both the QDC fluid as well as the XL-18 are both being used when the gearbox is delivered and mated to the engine and drivetrain. According to user reports, those folks that say they had their dealer service their MT82 gearbox with QDC and XL-18 reported significant improvement across the board, especially with cold shifts. I only bring this up because I suspect that there are Ford service reps. who have no idea that there is an additive that is required to go into the tranny during servicing that does not appear in the original TSB and I suspect does not appear in updated service manuals. In essence, and unless you looked at the Transmission Fluid Chart, you would not know about adding XL-18 to your MT82 Gearbox. Just thought I would pass this tidbit along...:headbang:

I'm going to try this my car has 570 miles on it and 4th gear is grinding a lil when cold. If this junky chinese transmission continues to give me trouble I'm swapping it out for a t-56 magunm XL. Tremec is what should have been in this car even if the car was a little bit higher. I don't feel like Getrag should have ever been put in a mustang. Listen to us ford!!! Get rid of the China transmission.:ford:

I can't find out where I saw it, but we should already have the XL-18 added to the QDC at the factory.

. Yes it is part of the build process. However, the original TSB does not address this and if you have your tranny serviced, the only way the technician knows to add the additive is by consulting the transmission fluid charts and in particular the notation in item 6 of the chart specifically stating that XL18 needs to be added to the QDC

Same way you confirm that the cylinder head bolts are torqued down. :headbonk:

BTW, I posted the motocraft transmission fluid chart in another thread. It specifies XL18 additive for the MT82.

If you're really up for wasting some money, the only way to be consistent is drain and refill with the specified fluid and additive.

I will just end up doing this if I feel anything funky with the trans when I take delivery. I will also add AM shifter and mounts. Whatever gets me through the day
