Hey All,

Get this out of the way:

- 2nd owner, 2017 GT350
- Completely stock, runs on 93 (non-ethanol 90 as I get closer to storing it)
- 20k miles
- Gen 1 motor
- Last oil change at 18k miles when the car came out for the spring/summer in March

Has anyone come across the “1-2” gear clash in their Shelby or the S550s in general? The car is fine below 3500 RPMS but for me, in 2nd gear, anything north of that and the grind comes out. I have not lost 2nd gear or the ability to shift from 1-2 or 2-3.

3rd/4th/5th all seem to be fine, no grinding all the way to red line and shifts are great. Not sure how long the problem has been there, typically I’m granny shifting or only doing pulls in 3rd on the highway so I don’t see high RPMs in 2nd often.

The grind is more of a “constant build up” as well, not so sudden as found in this video here

No need to overthink? 2nd gear synchronization issues get ready for the rebuild? At a minimum I will flush fluids and get an opinion from my local race shop that knows me and the car well.

I’ll try to get a video tomorrow so long as the storms hold off.

Thanks!

The tremec and mt82 are different transmissions. 1-2 has never been an issue for me going back to t5’s. The 2-3 was what usually went for me. You may do a little more diagnostic before changing fluid and putting the time and money in to that as you may be dropping the tranny any way.

Had that problem in my 2016 GT350 TR3160 from new. Put in the Motorcraft XT-11-QDC DCT fluid and XL18 additive targeted for the MT82. Problem solved for 30k miles.

Did you also put in slightly less than the manual said or right on the 2.5Q? I was reading that the suggested 3.9Q in the older trans was too much once everything heated up, but if you put in 3.25 problem solved.

Are you on a 30k mile trans flush/interval then?

Oh and what’s the deal with our recommended trans fluid being for an auto?

I'm assuming it's a Tremec as I own a 22 MACh1 and not a GT-350. I had a similar grind noise in mine that started around the 1000 mile mark. It was the reverse lock-out collar needing adjustment. Dealership technician drove it....and 2 hours later returned the car fixed. No problems since.

Yep, tremec.

I just took the car out cold, let the engine oil temperature warm up and wasn’t really seeing the issue….could it just be heat soak with the trans fluid somehow? The grinding was at its worst after already driving around 2-3 hours with mix of highway and city

IDK.....I'm not a mechanic. The tech told me that the collar problem is usually caused later with more miles due to drivers keeping hand pressure on the shifter pulling it towards the drivers side while driving.

Try a fluid change, it usually reduces gear nibble.

Original purchase date for original owner? Any chance it was on the lot for a while, you "could" be in the 5 year powertrain warranty?

I’d have to find out, unsure when original owner purchased the vehicle

The GT350 gearbox drain and fill instructions are simple: Remove the fill plug, remove the drain plug, when empty, put the drain plug back in, fill the transmission until it's starting to drip out of the fill hole, put the fill plug in loosely, run the engine for two minutes with the clutch engaged (gearbox in neutral) to refill the cooler and the cooler lines with fluid. Then take the fill plug out again and top off the transmission until fluid is once again dripping out the fill hole. Install and torque the fill plug. Job done.

It takes about 2.8 quarts, IIRC, to fill the box this way.

As for ATF in the box, that's what Tremec seems to spec for their road-going gearboxes.

Update: did a bit more driving today. At oil temps of about 170 and trans fluid temp at 110 I could rip through 1st/2nd without any issues. About an hour later after more driving, oil temps at 220 and trans fluid temp around 140, grinding came back north of 4500 rpms in 2nd.

Could this potentially be more of an oil thinning issue than a trans fluid issue?

I just listened to the video noises. I don't think it's fluid. Before you do anything else, change it with the spec ATF. If that doesn't fix it, then it's likely that the gearbox has a mechanical problem inside somewhere.

Fun fact to come back to this thread, finally got it looked at and in about 30 seconds into the test drive with a tech he knew exactly what it was!
