Gas Smell on Dip Stick

Hey Guys,

Just for the heck of it I was checking out the oil on my 2018 GT tonight... The car in total has about 15,900 miles on it.... 6-Speed Manual and the Dip Stick smells like gasoline.

The oil has the perfect color and feel to it... but there's a pretty big gasoline smell to it if you try and smell the Dip Stick. I'm not sure what to think? The car runs fine and doesn't do anything weird.

Only been 2 months and about 2,000 miles since it's last oil change.

What do you think my first course of action should be? Still has about 2 years left on the factory powertrain warranty...... Do you think it might be the piston rings leaking gas into the oil pan? Should I request a compression test on the pistons?

Nothing. It's a byproduct of the combustion process.

depends on how strong it is and if youre " making oil" , is the level starting to go up on your oil at all? i know one issue that can cause that is injector stuck open and leaking fuel in the cyl while it sits and gets down in the oil, but this all depends on how strong the smell is and that

I would do another oil change immediately and see what comes out in the catch pan. Does the oil smell like a heavy concentration of fuel? With new oil, drive the car and see if the issue repeats before heading to the dealer for more work. You do not want diluted oil running through these motors.

Hello; I do not know if the Ford engines have a test valve on the fuel injection rail. If they do the OP could hook up a fuel pressure gauge. My guess is the pressure will drop if an injector is leaking.

It’s pretty strong but I can only smell it if I actually try to smell the thing. If I don’t try to inhale it I can’t really smell it. I can tell you it the oil levels aren’t going up... in fact I’m borderline almost thinking in burning too much oil as well.

There is a concern if there’s some type of issue where there’s too much fuel getting into the oil; it’s not just washing down the cylinders, it’s also washing out the rotating assembly and diluting the lubrication, period.

You can do an oil analysis by taking a sample of your oil and sending it out to be tested. You can also do as others have suggested and change the oil, then see if the same problem persists.

If you’re burning oil and you think it’s excessive, you can do a charting of how much oil is being consumed in X-amount of miles or intervals (or have the dealership do it for you).

I really appreciate your advice and everyone else in this thread! I will send away for one of those kits. I will tell you, I pulled the dip stick on another car we have here.... a Toyota Corolla that's a year old... and the dip stick smelled exactly like mine, so that made me feel way better. I think what I smell is okay now after seeing it in a completely unrelated car. I'm going to get the kit though, because it's good to have for the sake of doing it and seeing how things are.

Yep, oil analysis.

You see this on DI cars sometimes as well. Stinky oil on stick, and it "grows" oil. All bad signs, but a UOA is the first step for fuel dilution.

Are you doing short drives ... like down to the store 1/2 mile away then back home? Or starting the car just to move it around the driveway or garage? If so, that can cause the oil to smell more gassy.

What's it smell like if you checked it after a long hot drive (50+ miles)?

Blackstone is pretty notorious for being terrible at testing for fuel dilution, over at bitog. I don't have a better suggestion but perusing bobistheoilguy.com would get an answer, OP.

That being said, fuel dilution for a DI is normal. Plenty of short trips where the oil barely scratches operating temperature can exacerbate the issue.
