Lifting the passenger side should slosh some fuel over. I am having difficulty remembering the exact shape of the s550 tank since I haven’t spent a lot of time under mine, but I don’t think jacking it will help much unless you jack it to extremes. All makes sense. So based on all of this I am certain I left some amount of gas in the pass. side of my tank, but based on the 15 gallons I was able to put in afterwards, it could not have been a lot. (I'm assuming I sloshed some over to the LH side as I was lifting the car onto blocks.)
I may look at some way to rig up a necked-down outlet for the unhooked feed line for the next time I drain fuel.
I don't want to make a big deal out of draining fuel, but it is great to fully understand what is going on. Thanks again.
If you began your drain procedure with less than a full tank, the challenge of getting the tank empty is much easier. While the fuel pumps outrun the jet pump, the jet pump still outruns fuel consumption during normal driving. So the passive side of the tank will empty before the pump side goes down, excluding slosh of course.
So if you have 3/4 tank or less, and you drive relatively calm for the last 10-15 min before parking to drain, the jet pump will have already had a very good head start at recovering the fuel and lowering the passive side. By the time the gauge says half tank during normal driving, left-turn-slosh excluded, the passenger side should already be empty as you are driving.
