I have the stock mufflers, an FRPP X-pipe and am looking for more volume. What do you guys think about adding these axle-backs, or am I going to get complaints from neighbors I've know for a long time?

It'll be a big change in volume but none other than the Roush will be crazy. Of those, Borla S-type. For keeping a low profile when you want, loud when you want: Corsa Touring.

I’ll give you a short blurb.

First did a muffler delete. Sounded identical beside a roush axel back. Loved it but wanted a different tone.

Installed a magnaflow resonated x pipe. Gave it a nice clean sound but was too muffled.

Put on a x pipe with the intention of putting on some axel backs. But I have gotten absolutely nothing but compliments daily since going with this set up. So out of your options. I would go with the Roush or Corsa extreme axel backs

So now you have a regular x-pipe and muffler delete?

So what you're saying is the Roush will be way too loud, but out of the rest go with the Borla Sport. What are your Corsa Sports like?

Yeah, the Roush with a resonator delete will definitely be a lot louder than anyone who's concerned about volume will like. The Corsa Sport catback (Corsa Touring axleback + double X-pipe) is a mid volume system, just a little bit louder at full song than the S-type. Plenty of volume when you get aggressive on the throttle but in traffic it's not that loud at all. You can also keep it barely noticeable in the neighborhood if you keep your foot out of it; it's not there thumping away no matter what. It also has dynamic range that I've yet to hear elsewhere (including the S-types which I do like). What I mean by that is it changes its tone all the way through the rev range and load range, rather than a consistent tone that just gets louder with revs/throttle. The RSC tech that completely eliminates drone also gives it that feature. Dead silent on the highway till you accelerate. I had the Xtreme catback before and it was too much for DD.

This video does as good of job as I've heard of capturing the sound, though still misses much of the deep tones like all exhaust videos. About halfway through you get exterior sound:

I personally had done the ford racing resonator delete and found it had added a bit more sound but still was way to muffled. I couldn’t justify the cost of these axle/cat back systems. So I spent another $250 and bought 2 magnaflow mufflers, and 2, 4” tips and welded them on. Simply couldn’t be happier with the sound. A little bit louder then just roush axle backs, and has a very deep sound. Honestly sounds like the engine gained a litre of displacement. And 6th gear, 2000rpm. Dead silent untill you roll into it. And even then zero drone at all. All in my system was about $500can, and an afternoon of welding.

So last month I picked up a set of Borla S-type axle backs off E bay for $659 shipped when they had one of their 15% up to $100 off days. Many thanks Nagare!

Yesterday was a nice cool day (for mid-July in Atlanta) and we installed them in the garage using jack stands. It was pretty easy since having already installed an FRPP x-pipe allowed us to drop each side in sections. An abrasive cutoff wheel in a 4" grinder was used to cut the pipes.

Unfortunately we could not get the RH tip to center in the valance cutout. It turned out that when they welded the hanger rod to that muffler it was at the wrong angle. Luckily I have done most of my own work over the past 40 years and have amassed quite a collection of tools which includes an OA torch. Clamped the whole muffler by the rod in the vise, heated it until bright red and bend it with a crescent wrench and some small diameter pipe. Now it lines up perfectly.

The sound is incredible. Less like a muscle car and more like a race car, which is the sound I like coming from a road racing background. The Borla S-type units are not much louder than the stock mufflers/FRPP x-pipe combo until you lean into it. Cold start is definitely louder, but at cruising RPM there is no drone.

Easy on the neighbors, but it will make you smile and turn heads when you push it. Perfect!

I do quite like the sound of the S type catback (which is what you have, for all intents and purposes)! Glad you're enjoying it.

I have an H pipe res delete with stock mufflers. It’s just a tad too loud and raspy for me. I’m going with the FRPP/Borla touring axle backs. They’re ordered but CJs is waiting for them to come in.

It's going to be significantly louder, FYI. It'll also have rasp but not the tinny metallic rasp that the stock mufflers do with a resonator delete.

How loud are you looking to be? How aggressive are you looking to be? And how do you like your rasp?

These are the 3 questions you need to ask yourself. Since you’ve gone with an X-pipe, much of the sound characteristics have already been shaped. Your gonna be raspy. The question is, are you comfortable enough with that sound to go with an axle-back that enhancers and embraces RASP, one that tries to tone down rasp, or one that is just about aggressive sound period.

Once you know what kind of tone your interested in, you can then narrow down your choices.

BmacIL speaks the truth! I started with a res delete (X Pipe in my case) with the stock mufflers and while I liked that you could hear the car more (volume), the quality of the sound was waaaay worse (for me personally), tiny, just bad....

I took the advice of many on this forum and visited a cars and coffee and another couple local gatherings and simply listened. As BmacIL points out, all of the setups were allot louder than I had thought, even those considered "quiet" or "conservative". Ultimately that ended up saving me allot of money - the setup I thought I wanted was not what I was looking for and I'm glad I took the time.....You should too, if at all possible... Put down the saw, grinder, and credit card and go check out some rides and ask a few questions :)
