People say FRPP tuning is very conservative tune yet it works with GT350 TB. I have 2015 GT PP car with Power Pack 2 I have looked at GT350 Manifold or 2018 Manifold. Every tuner I've talked too we can make more power over your current setup BUT say don't want tune with GT350 TB because at 2300 RPM you get a surge. Oh great buy another CAI so you can use stock GT TB. Amazing Ford Racing can make GT350 TB work. I have been talking to Tuners about using GT350 manifold or 2018 manifold. Then you hear cost of GT350 manifold over 1000 dollars DAH if you buy it from Ford Racing but at Ford dealer it 540 dollars or 344 for 2018 manifold. Now figure in cost of another CAI or go back to stock. I would like to use 2018 manifold but don't want to lose low side either. Most of the time we're street driving and in traffic. I've read post say oh you won't notice it and then turn around say I downshift more where before I didn't have too WOW. Seen Fords dyno sheets showing all 3 power packs but what do they look like with tuners play with them???? Would like to do long tube headers but with extreme Corsa catback have to change to sports mufflers.
I'm using my 87mm TB still with my new custom tune. My tuner didn't have any issues with tuning the 87mm TB and I don't notice any drivability concerns while driving. Not sure why tuners aren't using the GT350 TB.

I don't know about frpp tunes being very conservative. A certain well known someone in my area told me it was quite aggressive in timing especially low end on pump 91. Was told not safe. I went ahead and installed anyways and behold... Detonation.

It’s certainly not conservative, it’s actually a very good tune. I have a AED tune on the same hardware and yes you do get a weird flat spot in the torque curve somewhere around 2500 rpm . The gt350 Tb isn’t linear and I suspect part of the problem is perception as I have a 100% linear map. It could probably use a little bit of gain at 1/4 throttle pedal. I also find it actually spins up quicker now so in many cases the motor has hit the commanded revs and is never going to spin faster without more opening. I think most modern cars especially turbo diesels run lots of gain and that gets us used to something quite artificial.

I got a bit tired of searching forums and I do understand you're moving RPM range up from 6500 to 7500 RPM so power range going to change. So I went to tuners asking questions most said 2018 manifold, Stock GT TB and CAI like Roush. OK thats fine my question has always been how much I'm loosing on low RPM. My car daily driver I don't want to scream it every gear or drop a gear where before I didn't have too. I know what's like to have engine that hits like a switch. I had 1970 Mach1 with 351C 4V was lazy in tell you got 4000 rpm and pulled hard to 7500 rpm. Yes most forums and some tuners said Ford Racing tune leaves alot on the table. Some of it was sells pitch "we can do better" only had 1 say Ford Racing tune is good. But Ford racing will not change tune for headers and other things. I know why because they did emission testing and passed EPA regs so there not going back in. Other thing 2018 and up have higher compression ratio to make up for low RPM torq lost and direct injection. It seems 2018 manifold slightly better over GT350 manifold.

To be honest, I don't remember what my car felt like with the stock intake and TB as I got the PowerPack 3 installed right after it first came out which is over 3 years ago now. For me since I already had the GT350 intake manifold was if I had to go back to using the stock TB, I'd have to buy an adaptor plate for it to work on the GT350 manifold. I'm glad I didn't have to do that and that my tuner was able to tune my car with the 87mm TB without drive ability issues. Overall, I was happy with the Ford Racing PP3 tune while I had it. It hurt a lot of people feelings.lol

Thanks for honest answer................................................................ My car I put Power pak 2 on not longer after it came out or after tune revision. It did make lower RPM a lot stronger over stock and of course better upper end that fell off around 6500RPM. Still looking at 2018 manifold and maybe have long tube headers over winter.

Conceptually I liked pp3 most out of all. Higher redline with boost of hp/torque on the high end.

I bought pp2 though as it was cheaper and easy to diy.

I'm thinking now that PP3 might be better option from detonation point of view since it does not add much until high RPMs where detonation does not occur.

But then again.... cost of pp3 is too high and I'd rather add more and get FI where CA options are available and no detonation was reported

I imagine pp3 would help with detonation. I have owned my car for almost 4.5 years and have never taken it past 6500 rpms. I chose pp2 because that is the area of rpms I most use. I too am planning on FI early next year. Whipple headquarters is an hour south of me and being Carb exempt satisfies it all.

I'm looking at paxton novi 2200, carb, located in front of the engine so I can keep my strutbar, advertized as full bolton and so some people diy'd in 1 day. But I do not know much of what are different kinds of SCs available and which ones are considered to be generally good or bad.

I want to stay away from anything thats going to put extra stress on the crank snout. With adapters or extenders etc for pulleys. Not sure how the paxton is setup.

The tuner who made the Power Packs tunes for Ford Performance was a former calibration tuner for OEM Ford. This is one of the reasons why they were able to tune the GT350 throttle body, he knows part better than most.

I am not a tuner and I’ve never calibrated and engine or even strapped a car on a dyno. However I do know a thing or two about engineering. When people say that Ford Performance tunes are “conservative” do not believe it. They don’t have the same goals as a custom tune.

Ford Performance tunes are designed to be as close to their OEM equivalent as possible. As such, a considerable amount of time has been done on partial throttle drivability. That was by design and a goal.

MotoIQ mag did a long and detailed overview of all the Ford Performance packs. It was done at Palm Beach Dyno and it was their staff providing commentary about the tunes. Once you context what Fords goals were respective to these tunes you can appreciate them. And this was coming from PBD who themselves ARE a tuner. In particular they talked about why the GT350 throttle was so hard to tune by 3rd party tuners. It’s a very good read.
