It was definitely a win/win/win scenario...if both cars DNF he keeps the points lead...if Hamilton DNF and he wins the championship is over...even if he got a puncture as long as Hamilton DNF he wins. I am not sure though this much thought went into it. I believe it was an immature reaction based on emotions.
Setting aside that he was still looking to win after he allowed Lewis to pass, you are overlooking the possibility that Max could be taken out and Lewis still finish and even likely win or podium even if he needed a new wing. First order of business is to make sure he doesn't go to the last race with Lewis well ahead in points. Also leaving aside that you can't hide a brake check from officials and Max could lose all points for the whole season if he took Lewis out and finished high enough to win the championship. Ask Jacques.

It's just as likely (meaning not very) that Lewis convinced Max he would never pass even if Max came to a complete stop and brake checked out of annoyance. Psyche point to Lewis. LoL

Interesting lineup for tomorrow. Soft tires versus mediums.

Honestly I'm almost happy about Max being P1.

1. If Max gets a good start on his reds he will stay ahead of Lewis. Lewis will not push for a turn one overtake knowing how Max would react. There will be plenty of time for Lewis to get ahead later on.

2. If Max gets less than a great start and Lewis does, oh shit, there could be a real problem. Will Max use his brain and not force an issue that could take one or both of them out?

Either way, this should be a great race. Lando in third could be a real dark horse if Lewis and Max tangle.

And a final farewell to Kimi. He will be missed.

Lewis has been getting great starts lately. I think Red Bull will do a 2 stopper since they’re starting on softs and Merc will try and do a 1 stopper.

I agree. You know RB didn't want to start on reds. It might be an advantage going into turn 1 but after that I think the speed of the Mercedes will mitigate the advantage. I guess we'll see.

But that said, congratulations to Max, Christian, and Red Bull. And, of course congrats to Lewis, Toto, & MB for one hell of a comeback. It was one hell of a season. Can’t wait until next year.

As a newcomer to the sport as of two years ago, what do you guys think about the decision on the last lap? I keep seeing that Race Control only let 5 cars pass. Were there supposed to be more cars to pass before restarting?

Don't think there were more. Normally they are given more time to catch back up. But it's crazy for any race fan to prefer a race end under a safety car because of that. A race fan shouldn't mind it, but sure shouldn't want it. Obviously, a driver or team might want it, but no fan should unless they were a fan of a driver more than a fan of racing.

Great season, great race, great last lap. Mercedes and Lewis were the come back kings for sure after having a worse car in the beginning.

Only thing that would make the last lap better although I don't think it would matter any more than Lewis not giving back what he gained on the first lap, would be if they red flagged instead of safety car. That way they would both be on the same tires. As it was Mercedes didn't pit because they thought it might finish under yellow.

Of course, none of this is "the" reason one person or another won the championship, just why one won a race. I mean, in F1 drivers a lap down have gone on to podium IIRC because of the rule that lets lapped cars back on the lead lap. So, pure luck between no points and podium. Always going to be some luck. The more races the better chance it evens out.

There were more but that is really not the point. A decision was made moments before to not let lapped cars passed by Masi. He changed his mind at the last second because he knew he could get one last lap in if he only let the cars between Lewis and Max through. He also knew Max was on fresh reds vs. Lewis' worn whites. Only a total fool could not figure out what the outcome would be. Masi may be a moron but he is not a fool. A championship coming down to a ridiculous call by the race director is not what anyone wanted. Charlie Whiting must be rolling in his grave.

You are certainly right about luck though. If it were not for Latifi's accident none of this would have happened. Kind of ironic that he was in a Mercedes powered car.

This was a total clusterf-ck. But had all cars been allowed to pass as per the rules they would have not gotten the last lap in. That's what Masi wanted so he bent the rules to his liking.

That rule reads: “If the clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message 'LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE' has been sent to all Competitors via the official messaging system, any cars that have been lapped by the leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the Safety.
