Yesterday my mustang passed its first MOT with flying colours. The emissions were spot on, despite the gt350 IM and aftermarket tune which I was a little concerned about.

I hear that some cars running aftermarket cats have been failing on emissions recently, which brings me onto my next question. Has anyone passed emissions with non standard cats? If so can you post the type of cat? E.g kooks green etc?

Would suggest not posting any details if you passed an mot at anywhere “specialist”... stick to 100% above board places.

Another reason to keep your original cat back in the garage and not use an axle back! Any issues then 5 min job to replace.

When I had the headers and cats fitted I had the garage run an emissions test so I knew they would be ok.

I'd love to see someone change an exhaust in 5 minutes, takes me longer than that to find my axle stands :cwl:

Thanks. Good to hear kooks greens pass our mot standards. As I suspected it makes sense to spend a bit more on the cats

Excatly my thoughts. I read Enoch's comment on MoT then went & looked at his videos related to the install of LTH & IIRC 200 cell cats.

So now I'm totally confused by conflicting claims about what exhaust modifications will pass the test

Are all 200cell cats created equal?ie does 200cell refer to the size of the pours an not the length ?

Just asking as I would love to fit headers at some point but not at the expense of it being ‘harder’ to pass an mot as they are closing the loopholes all the time

It determines the number of cells per square inch of substrate, most pure race/track cats are 100 cell, as road emmsiions specs are not needed to be complied with.

But if you need to go on road, or be in a competition where a pass on road legal emissions tests is required then 200 cell are recommended.

In a sports cat the substrate is usually a stainless steel, instead of majority of road cars where the substrate is a 400 to 600 cpsi ceramic that is very susceptible to vibrations and excess heat damage, the sports cats are far more durable as made from steel.

Basically it is always advisable to get the biggest catalytic converter you can. By biggest I mean diameter of the cat, be it 4", 5" or 6", different manufacturers can supply larger or smaller depending upon need.

The larger the cat means lower back pressure, but mainly more surface area of the substrate, therefore it will have more chance to get the emissions within spec.
