Hi all, hope you're all enjoying the summer?

In a conversation with a friend the other nght regarding new MOT laws from the end of this month...

I have seen the advertised changes regarding DPF checks, 40 yr old cras being exempt etc.. but my friend seems to have been informed that they will also be clamping down on mods?

He says that an aftermarket exhaust, if louder than stock, (as they all are), will fail, changes to suspension will fail, however i can only see this being the case if the car has silly changes like we see on some "stanced" cars?

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

It's more about under bonnet noise insulation than exhaust on my reading of it.
That "louder than stock" rule has been around for ages. Anyone with motorbike knows about having to put the baffles back in. But non-silly changes have always got through.

Specifically the changes are (top of that document):
New items
New items that you will test from 20 May 2018 are:

brake fluid contamination
additional braking device performance
daytime running lamps
front fog lamps
reversing lamps
bumpers
prop shafts
all rear drive shafts
cab security
cab steps
floors
passenger hand grips (quads and heavy trikes only)
noise suppression material
undertray security
emission control equipment:
oxygen sensor
NOx sensor
exhaust gas recirculation valve
other emission control equipment
engine malfunction indicator lamp
diesel particulate filter (DPF) tampering
fluid leaks - engine, transmission and so on

Actually that's all well and good but this link is for the actual test document and what they're testing.

https://training.mot-testing.servic...class3457/Section-8-Nuisance.html#section_8.1

8.1 Noise

8.1.1 Noise suppression system
You must inspect:

exhaust silencers
under-bonnet noise deadening material fitted as original equipment – you don't need to inspect this for Class 3 vehicles
You must use your judgement to assess exhaust noise:

during the emissions test for the vehicle
rev the engine to around 2,500rpm or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower on vehicles not subject to an emissions test
Exhaust noise from the vehicle must not be unreasonably above the noise level you'd expect from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.

So there is still the usual wiggle room there. It's entirely subjective

Defect Category
Exhaust noise levels in excess of those permitted
Major
Any part of the noise suppression system:
insecure
Major
likely to become detached
Dangerous

Glad to see they're finally looking at oil leaks. I have always considered cars that leak oil on the pavement an environmental pest. It's a spot fine in California!!

There's a dB figure on your V5 should it come to an argument.

Oh shit!! No argument there then. I don't need to ask if the Borla atak is over what the V5 states:doh::doh:

Yes but that was the figure from when new not, used and in “ reasonable condition”. But this has been a rule for ages. Friendly MOT testers...
