Until March, I'd always been a pickup guy...

Oil changes in those are easy... crawl under, position drain pan, drain oil, reposition drain pan, drain filter, have a beer, remove filter, and replace everything (except the beer) in the reverse order.

That's great when there is a clear shot from the oil filter body to the floor. When the seal opens, oil drains out to the nadir of the filter before falling into the pan (1977 C10, 2002 Silverado, 2008 F250). The one exception being a 1999 L4 S10 which had a horizontally mounted oil filter. This vehicle had a clever plastic gutter which emptied the filter near enough to the drain plug that the pan did not have to be repositioned to drain both the sump and the filter.

--Enter 2016 Mustang GT.--

After buying ramps because I'm much thicker in the Z-axis while lying down than the vehicle clearance allows... I eventually locate the filter. behind a cross-member and hidden behind a rubber flap. There is no clear shot from the filter to the floor... so oil will get onto something I can't reach to clean. There is an outside chance it will all just run down the rubber flap into the pan, but that doesn't seem likely.

How do you deal with the filter draining?

I know a lot of guys use a freezer or shopping bag when they unscrew the filter so all the excess oil that leaks out is captured.

Bag is a good way to go.
If you have something sharp, you can poke a hole in the oil filter to drain the filter before unscrewing.

Al foil it is!

I tried the bag... with that you just end up with a bag full of hot oil that you don't really have a great grasp on above your face.
It's not that bad.

Lol this doesn't look nearly as bad as the SI. I have to take the pass front wheel off to get at the filter. Then the oil spills all over control arm and tie rod bushing.

Well i just changed my oil a couple weeks ago, I have a non-PP car so i removed that panel to access the oil filter. And lemme tell ya, it was a breeze to get to, take off (with the bag trick said in an earlier post, and put back on. There is, however, on mine a control module or some type of ECM right below the filter, and when removing the filter I got a SMALL amount on one of the covered wires leading to it. Wiped right off. IM not exactly sure where I've seen some on here say it was tough to get to...Sure didn't seem like it to me. :)

I second the aluminum foil funnel. Make a custom funnel every time and throw it in the trash when done.

so 10,000 miles later and I discover the 4mm pannel bolt that holds the flap under the oil filter.

This time I removed it and that was SO much easier. No bags, no funnels, no mess. The filter drains onto the flap which directs the oil to the catch pan... A few drips on the flap to wipe up with a blue towel, and done. Lost exactly 1 drop to the floor.
