Hi folks, so last Saturday a nice old chap in an old fiesta crashed into my 2015 EcoBoost, and it’s been declared a total loss. Now to me being a. Stang owner is something special, I’m sure you all agree!

I’m looking around and to be honest I’m not thrilled with what I see around, but a 2018 Facelift model has caught my eye, my questions on this are twofold, I experienced the dreaded galvanic corrosion on mine, and was looking to have both front wings and bonnet replaced, I’m hoping that the newer model will have seen this problem eliminated?

The second question I have is regarding performance, it says it’s 290 bhp as opposed to the 315 that mine was putting out, is the difference noticeable? Thanks, Jon.

If you are looking for a horsepower difference why not consider moving up to a GT?

The corrosion problem of Ali panels has been going since 2005 and will continue while they still use aluminium. However some cars are effected worse then others and some not at all. It’s complete luck which will be better or worse.

As someone else has said, I think the corrosion issue is pot luck. Deffo something to ask about/inspect if you end up viewing it.

Other benefits for the facelift would be the oil cooler issue, I'm lead to believe that late pre lift models also had an appropriate fix in place, but the face lift ones certainly do. In general I've heard that the facelift models drive a bit better, the MT82 transmission is said to be smoother, although I've not driven a face lift myself. Personally, I prefer the look of the pre face lift, but that's a moot point.

I felt compelled to reply as I was one who went from EB to GT. I was 30 at the time I made the switch, and other than having to put more money in the tank, there really wasn't much difference in running costs. Insurance didn't really change, I think tax ended up being less (I pay about £15 a month). All depends on what kind of driving you expect to do I guess, but it's a decision I've never looked back on.

Thanks Kristian, I’m certainly tempted to go to a GT, had a few barbs from mates that I’ve been driving a “Shetland Pony”! I also agree that the pre facelift cars do look better, the front looks a little bland on the later models. Just trying to find something I like from a dealership that looks trustworthy is looking difficult.

To be honest I’ve felt a little down since the accident, I’m sure like most of you guys on here, owning a Mustang was a long held ambition, and to see it gone almost in the blink of an eye has been hard to swallow. Hopefully something will turn up this week.

I have a 2018 EB and both wings were replaced due to corrosion last year under warranty (all paint stamps ok with electronic record).

Sorry to hear of your accident and car loss.

I guess the facelift models have the digital dash, working tri-bars and LED headlights, active exhaust (GT). Tbh if you can get the GT then why not, V8 sounds great and pulls hard but reality on the road i doubt there's a difference in overtaking grunt and the ecoboost might have better turn in for the corners. Oil cooler (oil warmer) likely an issue on any age of GT but the likelihood of that issue is small to very small (i removed mine cause my luck is borderline punishment lol)
Newer the car the more warranty is cancelled have, pre facelift models will all be out of warranty no?
I guess it depends on how much purchasing power you have.

You can keep the Ford warranty (be it slightly different than the factory Ford warranty) rolling, but I don't know if it's transferable to a new owner ?

in the UK IIRC the original buyer has to get the extended warranty, it cannot be added later even inside the original warranty period. Thats what i was told by a dealer though obviously they could have been talking mince yet i believed them.

edit: got the car valeted Monday there, the bubbling on the lower drivers side wing trailing edge was pointed out to me. Sigh

I think that might have been sales talk (for commission), OR something might have changed, OR its a slightly different scheme to what you can get if you extend it from new.

I only added mine at the 3 year point (after I checked oil cooler, LED headlights, and digital dash were covered). At four years, I added another year :like:

If I recall, you just couldn't add it after the original warranty expiry date, or the extended warranty anniversary date i.e. it had to run seamlessly with no gap :like:

Just to be clear, its a Ford branded warranty (not third party dealer aftermarket type warranty), this is the letter heading on their communications :

Post 2019 cars seem to have few problems with aluminium corrosion. 2019 onwards get Sync 3 which can be fully updated to current spec if that is something you value. Quite a few other upgrades along the way such as ACC, digital dash, much better LED headlights.

Power reduction for the Ecoboost isn't as bad as it looks as torque is actually better. V8 gets more power post facelift.

Very few post facelift Ecoboosts were ever sold.
