It is indeed electronically controlled. The valves are driven by a small DC motor placed just over the inner exhaust pipe exit.

My issue was that the home position on passenger side was never correct from the factory.
I'm going to revive this thread simply because this problem -- which I'm experiencing with regularity -- is so damn annoying. Last night the malfunction actually dampened the exhaust so much I could barely hear the engine at all. That was a new one.

I wonder what percentage of owners are having this problem? And at what point does it become a recall/TSB issue? I am sure my local dealer will have never heard of this when I take it in.

What's the temps like there in DC?

I would like to see who's having the most issues with the valves... Coastal regions vs northerners vs Midwest, etc... maybe it's more an environmental issue than a dissimilar metals issue.

Chilly. 30s and 40s.

I assume you're suggesting a thermal expansion etc issue. I'm starting to think there's an ambient temperature link as well. The odd thing is, I've had it malfunction in a 50 degree garage as well.

Yeah thermal and if you're near the coast, a humidity with salt water issue.

If you had problems in a 50* garage then I would tend to wonder if the salt water + humidity issue locked the valves after shutoff.

Makes sense. I had mine lock once in below zero temperatures, but they locked while I was driving (initially opening and then locking closed). I mostly have waited for the relatively warm 20 degree or higher days to drive it and haven't had problems on those days. Yesterday it was single digits above zero and I had the dealership change the oil and I ran a couple errands. The valves were working perfectly.

The roads here are white this time of year from all the salt on them. I don't drive the car when it's wet or snowy, so I'm not completely soaking it in salt water, but the exhaust is getting exposed to water from the engine and salt from the roads.

Good point Hack... If small rocks, pebbles or sand are able to get there, salt surely can.

Will the Track key offer more performance compared to sport or track modes?

Mine will not go from Normal to Sport while in reverse. Not sure if anyone else has noticed this or not. It may be designed that way. I don't read instructions so I wouldn't know:shrug:

Hack......You are tough! Do you have any surging at these low temps till oil is warm (Above125 or so) ?

The oil doesn't really get very warm when it's very cold and you are running on the street. It gets up to 135 or so if the outside temps are 30 F. I changed the oil at about 1800 miles just because I've run it a few times in very cold temperatures and I thought it would be good to get some of the initial break-in debris out of there.

No, I haven't noticed surging being bad in cold conditions. I have noticed very slight surging a couple times, though. It's not sustained or continuing, just happens briefly as the car warms up. I think I've noticed it 2 or 3 times since I've owned the car. Not every time I drive or anything, and IIRC it was worst when the car was brand new. I haven't noticed it lately.

This car is a pleasure to drive, but I don't have the heart to drive it in below zero like we had today (-18F showed on my gage this morning before I got closer in to town). The heated seats make this car more comfortable in the cold than anything I've ever owned.
