Between chrome and black for my PP wheels but can’t find many posts about the longevity of the paint on the black ones.
For anybody with black gorilla lugs, how well does the paint hold up?

Had my splined locking black ones for going on a year. They've been on/off maybe 4 times and aren't even marred.
I know that's not a long time but it is a really good start.

Can you tell if they're painted, powder-coated, or if they were cast in black?

I think they are black chrome. Not painted.

Did you use any special kind of socket?

Find a good local powder coater...
powder coating won't hold on a lug nut. it'll break right off. atleast in my experience to any real torque.

on side note, never had any issue with chrome or black gorilla nuts looking bad.

I've got the black lugs. They show marks where I hit them with the impact gun.

IMHO the finish holds up really well. Mine have (finally) developed a few chips, but they've been on and off the car literally 100 times. Not kidding.
